92 LX d16y7 Turbo Project...

Hello all. Just wanted to say that all of the useful links and FAQ on this HMT forum really helps a NOOB like myself out alot to learn just the basics about turbocharging. Now for some info:

I have a 92 LX 4 door with the crappy b7 motor...*blown headgasket*...i bought a complete y7 obd2 longblock w/48k for 350 because i was told the y7 could handle boost up to 7-8 psi pretty good and safely...(also from reading soo many posts)

I have some idea of what to get and what not, but after reading 10 pages of d16y7 topics, none of them really pertain to what info i need. Most pertaining to 96 + Civics

I guess the real question is, has anyone boosted a y7 in a 92 Civic before, and if so, what were your setups like? ie turbo, fuel managment, reliability, etc.

Keep in mind, im using a Z6 intake manifold, my old Throttle Body, my old ECU, and my b7 distributor...

Any info would help me alot...thanks in advance! :)

You really have to do some more reading. Basically boosting any d-series motor is the same, except for OBD years and ECU's. Doesn't matter if it's a y7 z6 a6 or for most cases a DOHC ZC. Just llok at any post, even if it's a d15 or a z6 in you rear range and it will portain to you. D-Series internals are basically same ---- different pile. If you tune and treat them rights they might be nice in return if you give them 12psi if you wanted and not breaking.

in essence, they're the same...but internals are a bit different. From what i've read, z6's and y8's or VTEC motors tend to blow(lose) more oil then non-VTEC motors...ie a6 y7 I also found something interesting about the Y's having a poorly designed oil pump?

thanks for clearing up the turbo aspect of it though...meaning the different turbos and setups i could use and what to be aware of!

you'll be fine, boost it to 200 hp and call it a day. I am boosting a Y7 right now with a 48/60 T3 at 10 psi with a side-mount intercooler :-\ so... Your oil pump will be fine too. And sohc vtec motors have no problems with oil consumption, all sohcs suck the same pretty much.

Though the y series motor do have a problems with spun bearings. My y7 in my hatch held 1 bar for 3 months of beating until it spun a bearing but I still drove it for another month like a bitch(not over 3k) till I found another engine but even when I pulled it out it still ran and ----.

ive been running 7.5 psi with a t3 42/48 and a dsm smic for almost a year now on a basemap and ive had no problems whatsoever. as soon as i get my JRC FMIC im having it tuned and running around 13 psi with a metal head gasket and ARP studs.

Re: 92 LX d16y7 Turbo Project...

So i guess its got alot to do with fine tuning and KNOWing what you are doing at the same time...your setups sound nice...have anymore detailed how to's or pictures of your setups? Id like to see the specific turbo and motor with the same chassis...i've seen the y7 in the newer civics, but they're using the y7 intake manifold which im not.

Thanks so far guys!
