Default 91 escort gt

I'm in the process of researching the possibilities of turboing my 91 escort GT. I looked around here and several people have the LX with the 1.9 turboed so I figured why not go for the 1.8 dohc ? So I have a million questions, but the posts about the turbo escorts here aren't very in depth. Those of you who have them, please lend a hand. First off ... where can I suorce a manifold from ? I think the 1.8 DOHC was a mazda engine ? I'm not sure. Finding info on this car is difficult. I'd like to 'do this right' so I'd prefer to work with the computer and tune it if possible. I'd like to avoid a stand alone if possible (I'm a poor college student). Any help/info/websites you guys could point me to would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking !

Yes you have a Mazda engine. Your same engine was used in Japan factory turbo'd, with changes in piston/compression ratio and a few other little things, but those same parts will work on your engine. Or for about $1200 you can buy the entire engine with manfiold and turbo included.
Do a search for GTX Just dont get confused with the US 1.6 GTX turbo, you want the 1.8 GTX turbo.

well, like I said ... poor college student, $1200 for another engine is a bit much for me. I bought the car for $100 not running, put a new dizzy in it and now I've got a running escort.

Jeff - Thanks so much for your help, I really appreciate it. Do you think this engine will handle 10psi daily ? because thats my goal ... eventually.

When I searched through the HMT forum for turbo escorts and such, I found that alot of people have used megasquirt ... and that seems like it'd work decently but ... I'd prefer to chip the computer ... I'm a Computer Engineering major, so it'd be right up my alley

Is it possible that with some larger injectors (any recommendation ?) a chipped ECU (anyone know if thats a possibility or not ?) and some ignition system upgrades I'll be able to hit 10psi safely ? I'd appreciate your input guys. Thanks.

You'll find more info on a Mazda Protege Forum, a 91-96 Escort GT is a Mazda Protege, just with 2 doors and a Ford emblem. They use the same 1.8 bp motor. It's a good solid motor, 200whp should be easy with out too much invested. From what I've read, the Mazda ECU is'nt chipable like a Honda or Ford ECU is. Your other optons is to use a GTX Turbo ECU, or stand alone, or piggy backs.

What kind of modification/any modifications would I need to do in order to get the protege ecu running correctly ? It obviously wouldn't be plug 'N' play ... that'd be too easy.
