Default 89 conquest (starion) acceleration problem

my buddy's conquest idles fine but as soon as you push the gas it sputters. and he says the boost gauge will jump back and forth from boost to vacuum.
we both were thinking fuel problem. i have yet to see the car and get dirty but before i do does anyone have any insite to these cars.
i think they have 2 huge injectors and one cold start injector. (i could easily be wrong though)

thanks

Sounds like a boost or vacuum leak to me. Pressure test your charge system and IB you'll find a leak. Fuel injector seals go out in those things pretty regularly and leak a lot of air which makes your mixture wacky as ----. You can look up the directions for a boost leak tester on Google. They're about $5 and are invaluable for use with turbo Mitsu haha.

I had one, with the same symptoms. It's most likely the secondary injector seal like crx said.

cool. yeah those little rubber seals are super cheap. sounds like a good idea to try.

that would make sense the the secondary seal was going out too.
thanks
ill get back with an update.

ok so i went and looked at and drove the car.
it drives fine until you hit boost. then it starts to bog like if you were running out of gas.
but if you let off the gas and let it idle back down below boost levels its fine again.
also its spitting out black stuff out of the tailpipes. didnt smell like fuel or oil. just looks
and feels like carbon but why is it spitting it out like that.
so thats the update for now. still need to pull those injectors out.

Boost leak. Stuff out the tailpipe is condensation. Its normal.

Fix the injector seals, you may have to cap off the turbo and the upper intercooler pipe, check for boost leaks. Bicycle pumps are your friend.

I use to own a Mitsubishi cordia turbo and they use the same style head. I had the same problem it would idle and cruse fine but as soon as it got to any boost it would bog and not rev any higher. I pulled the valve cover off and found 2 of the 4 jet valve lifters were broke off. Jet valve eliminator kit fixed that and got me some more HP at the same time. Also conquest have a mess of vac. lines I had a pin hole leak in one of them and it would bog and act stupid. I replaced all the lines and it fixed it.

Dang I need to get my conquest running again. Its been sitting in my basement for 2 years no. Blew the head gasket between 2 and 3 cly. I pulled the motor and tore it down but never got it fixed. Such a scary and fun car.

Good luck

if your looking for a vacuum leak grab some carb cleaner and spray all the vacuum lines when it starts to cut you founbd your leak although its not 100%

That works great for consistant vacuum leaks, but doesnt reveal anything of an intermittent boost leak.

+1 forgot about the jet valves. Leak down test would reveal this if it is your problem.

causing much corrosion

probably causing the turbo seal to go bad (although no shaft play was found, shaft didnt spin as freely as i thought it should) and
making it spit out black ---- all over the wall with the consistancy of water. and not really any smell

just like any 20 year old car theres gunk in the charge pipe
