88' 626 first project in along time

I picked up this gem about 6 months ago. 88' Mazda 626 4WS, turbo, auto. It had been sitting for 2-3 years. the previous owner had the turbo rebuilt because of a bearing failure. Well they put the rebuilt turbo on and it lasted about 50 miles and they thought the engine was toast. I bought the car, took of the turbo and found the oil supply line completely blocked with carbon ----. cleaned it out and in the meantime picked up a fully functional 90 probe GT with a 5sp tranny. the kid who owned it hit a deer with it and said ---- it I guess. I basically got the car for free. so said probe was raped of all its good parts and taken to the scrapyard. I stuck the stock turbo on the 626 and drove it for awhile. BORING! In the meantime i was piling together all the ---- I would ned to do a turbo swap so a few weeks ago my buddy came down to my work with his TIG and helped me make this into a fun car to drive. I did the 5sp swap the day before. Enjoy

Ching chong WG. assholes sent me a 16 psi spring instead of 8psi so I took it apart cut 3/4 of a coil off the spring flattened it out a bit so it would sit level and voila solid 11psi

Ah well thats not to bad, is it still 4wd?

Re: 88' 626 first project in along time

4WS. four wheel steering. to answer, no. the shift rails between 4WS cars and non-4WS cars are different. my 5sp stuff came from a probe, so no 4WS there...had to bend the rails to get them to fit and had to remove the shaft that goes to the rear steering ---- to clear the rails. and I still have some issues with 5th gear, replaced the synchro but the gear may need replacement too, or may be still just a linkage issue. the 4WS didnt work anyway so I dont give a ----. in the future I may try to remedy the situation, but right now Im thinking MS, JAW, custom equal length runner manifold and 300 whp in my future. :6

Are the exhaust ports connected in pairs, or do they just go 00 00 ??

SiFlyBy 04-09-2008 02:54 AM

Re: 88' 626 first project in along time

the stock manifold has individual runners. there just direct and not equal length...but yeah from the head its like 00 00 instead of 0 0 0 0 like some other engines.

Looks good man. Hows it run with the vaf inline with the TB like that? I've been thinking of running that setup too.

Thanks. Ive actaully been a member here for a couple years, but didnt want go posting and ---- till I had something to prove that Im not just another 14 year old(whether physically or just mentally) with a computer and internet access. theres already enough self proclaimed 'knowers' around.

it runs great...seems to start hard unless you crack the throttle though. im not too worried. ive been studying up on MS and will probably get that ---- rolling here in the next month or 2 when I have the specifics worked out.

Cool, let me know your progress on the MS i have mine sittin here waiting to put it on, im still kinda confused on what im gonna do with the ignition. I cant get a straight answer, some people say to lock a NA one, some say the stock one so iono. I've got the MS built ready to go tho.

yeah. i havent attempted to tune at all yet. wont till I get MS. im just running ~11psi. any higher and I get fuel cut. but even ~2 psi over stock it totally hauls compared to the stock setup

IM trying to work that out too. it seems that guys are using a stock trigger wheel from inside the distibutor and grinding down 2 teeth 180 degrees apart and setting one of them at 60 degrees BTDC. Ive stopped reading for now because itll just confuse me with out pictures and im out of town so I cant go to the garage and pull the dizzy off of the spare engine I have to get a visual reference. Alot of the terminology is foriegn to me also, so I think I will the kit, put it together and then read more on the tuning after ive had my hands on all the parts.
Heres an idea...how about YOU get yours up and running and then help ME with mine :y

Well alot has changed in the past few months. My t-bird T3 blew the ---- up in mid-May or so. I took it off and sent it to BLAAST for inspection , though I knew it was fucked. Decided to get a T3/T4 from him, got that, installed it and then the engine blew the ---- up in mid-June. Swapped the engine for the one I got from the Probe with the 5sp. tranny. Next I bought, built, installed and tuned Megasquirt. Removed 5th gear since it would pop out under load, "machined" it, reinstalled it and now, by the grace of God or something it works fine(though I am hesitant to put any real power through it). Next on the list are some bigger injectors and a 255lph fuel pump. Both of which I have, but have yet to find the time to install and re-tune. Heres a few pics of the progress:

Finally decided to paint my charge piping black. looks much better now.

Yes, the EGT guage is held to the others with zip-ties. ---- You, it works, this was a $500 car.

I can't believe that the stock(used) clutch is still hoding strong. I'm making probably 210-230whp on 11-12psi. That is a complete guess though as I havent dynoed it yet. It will be dynoed when the injectors are installed and boost is upped to the 16-18+psi range. hoping for 300whp or so. I raced a brand new Mustang GT the other day and it was pretty even until I shut it down at about 60mph.

Holy ---- people, okay I will try hard to get some ripper/burnout vids. 1 question though: can I just host these from photbucket like a picture?

That is a good question to which I do not have a good answer. I called BLAAST, told him what I had, what my goals were and he put together the turbo for me. It is supposed to have a "stage 3 turbine wheel", whatever the ---- that means. .63 a/r turbine housing. No clue on the compressor specs, but I know its one of the smallest that he has, .50 a/r comp. housing. I do know that it spools quick and pulls hard to 6k rpms at 13 psi. We'll see soom how it does at 18 or 20 psi soon.

That's very sweet man. Only suggestion I would have is to flip those front t-clamps around on the piece of charge piping up top. Don't need that shifting around and stabbing your radiator. :)

My roommate has two of these beasts in the backyard. One for parts, one to fix, both overheated. Has a spare engine in the garage, just hasnt had time to put it in... and oddly enough hes going to pick up an mx6gt for like 500 tomorrow. So that will make the total cost of all three cars, um, about 900 bucks.

Thanks for the suggestion, but my engine mounts are filled with window weld. It doesn't move.
