86 turbo toyota pickup project/problems

5 Attachment(s)
So I just picked up my new ride! I found an 86 turbo toyota xtra cab 4x4 truck. It was not exactly what I was looking for, cause it is an automatic, but that is about to change. I got it for 2200 dollars, which I thought was a really good deal for the shape it is in. The motor runs a little rough, but has a few obvious problems. First of all, the first thing I did was change the oil, which was super black and probably not changed in like 10k miles. Then, it runs super rough on idle, and I was trying to figure out what was causing it. It felt like an ignition problem, and to add to that, it is running quite rich, like 13mpg rich. I replaced the plugs, and it had new cap and wires when I bought it.

Then I started focusing my attention on the MAF. It is a wierd maf, and has a flapper in it. I found out that it is working correctly, so then I was stumped. I tested the O2 sensor with a volt meter, and it read a solid .052 at idle, meaning it is stuck on that reading, so I replaced that. still didn't fix the rich problem. I then found out that my rubber hose that goes from the MAF to the turbo has been nig-nogged up with tape, meaning it is probably cracked or something. That means unaccounted air is getting into the motor making it run lean, then when the O2 sensor sees the miscommunication between the O2 and maff, dumping in more fuel to counteract it being lean. Thats what I think at least. Injector may be stuck open or something, but I am going to replace the intake tube first and see if that fixes it.

Also, my turbo is blown, it has bad shaftplay and I have a bunch of oil in the intake tube. It is a stock ct20 turbo, a tiny one at that. I would like to replace it, but have been looking into the fact of using a ct26 off a supra. I am not sure if they have the same flange, so i guess that is my question. Does anyone know if the ct26 turbo will bolt up to my manifold? also does anyone have any suggestions of cool upgrades to do to this truck? this is my first toyota, mainly work on hondas!

swap to a t3, add an intercooler

intercooler will definitely be going onto it. I bet that alone will make it run a ---- ton better.

your cold start injector may be stuck on, from the fuel rail there is a 1/8" steel line that goes to a weird sort of injector on the intake , facing valve cover, right around the 'b' in turbo, unplug it, start back up. it's a mildly known issue, but they also make for cheap boost enrichments :). go to the parts store and get a new cap/rotor, looking new isn't new, and set the timing. cam could be off, if you can't pull a 10% grade at 55 without needing to downshift to 4th, you're underpowered. 13mpg is low, but not terribly out of toyota range, my 22r was carb'd, 31" bfg at's, running rich on a weber and i'd average high teens for mileage, flooring it really didnt make it much worse.

ya, I saw that injector, and never thought about that being the problem. how would you recommend determining if that was the problem or not. I would just unplug it and see if that fixes it, but if it is stuck open, I would not be able to tell.

as for this...!!! I have actually been looking for a header flange to make a new manifold to accept a t3 or t3/t4 turbo. I have a garrett super 60 i need to get rebuilt that will be perfect size for that motor. my drivers tail light is broken as you can tell too, so I will probably be taking you up on both of those offers here really soon.
