572" BBC Twin... turbo selection...
I was wondering what you fellas thought for possible sources for turbos for this truck.. needs to hit ~20psi max and have the turbos come in at around 2500.
Should i scour regular yards for powerstrokes/cummins etc and pick up a couple of those? or am i going to need to hit up a Class VI (big rig) yard and pull a couple of those monsters.
Plan is to use twins and have them running to their own water coolers. I'm just concerned on finding yard stuff that could accomodate this motor.
And yes i did say 572 CID.
motor is balanced for over 8k rpm operation easy and is fully setup for supporting that sort of boost with the fuel system i'll be using. Thanks in advance.

What are your hp goals? you will easily be over 1000hp with alot less than 20psi.. Also what rpm range are you running the engine.. You said balance to 8000rpm but you want boost by 2500rpm?? Why?
A pair of powerstroke turbos would work pretty well. A pair of 60-1 t4s with .82 ar turbines should work pretty well for you also. They will get you up close to the 1200hp mark before running out of air.

No specific HP goals in mind actually, because this thing will be running an alternative fuel or two... however 20psi is my imposed limit based on octane and compression.
The motor is set up with a cam for about 2500-8500range 229@.050, .578 lift. It's a hyd. roller cam with comp hyd. rollers and comp roller rockers so she's good to run up some more lift and cam pretty easy.
I'll probably switch in a more turbo suited cam later but this is how it sits n/a for the moment.
You fellas mentioned those Powerstroke turbos... what sorta design are they? Similar to T4 or what?
Also what years would be the most desireable for nice a/r etc etc. Thanks much,
Greg

PS turbos are GTP38, they have a divided tang and a wierd "pedestal mount" instead of a flange. They are reputedly good to 450 hp each.

I'd suggest Holset HC5A, which comes mounted on 20 liter diesels (and I know nothing else about it), but your 8000 rpm revlimit kinda skews that. Dual Holset HX40? Time to look at some compressor maps.

I have a feeling its gonna be hard to cheap out on the turbos. They are gonna have to be huge and your dealing with a size that most junk yard guys never have to look at. You could run twin t72 turbos.. Really you should try to figure out where you want to powerwise.. How much can you realistically use? is this a drag only car? You can make all the power in the world but if you can't get traction whats the point. Do you know the bore and stroke of your motor?
These guys are right...don't skimp on the turbo setup...the reason why we do/can is because there is so much info on the web for the DIY'r and because our little mouse motors can be replaced for so little money and relatively quickly.. Can you fab your own parts? if so then I'd give Garret a call and get the proper NEW setup with dual ext gates and fab up your own manifolds. Good luck and be sure to post pics!
Thanks, i was hoping to find something in a yard possibly but as i figured and you folks mentioned it's gonna be tough. I used to work for Garrett soo i had some ideas and i'll try to get back in touch with my old colleagues.
Believe it or not this isn't going to be a drag vehicle.. just my toy that i continually like to dump money and time into
Power would be best suited as i said coming in about 2500 or so and i'd probably not go more than 6500 much of the time. Traction is NEVER going to happen but i'm not concerned with it.
Regarding fuel management it will actually be using things similar to carbs run in a blow thru setup. Fuel injection in AFV is shaky right now and getting things (research aside) is rather pricey.
Thanks for all the help.
