42-trim Turbo... how much boost to make 225whp?
 

Alright, on my D16Z6 with stock internals i'm going to be using:
Garrett T3 42-trim turbo
RC 440cc injectors
Walbro 255LPH fuel pump
log manifold
2.5" charge piping
28"x7"x2.5" FMIC
38mm Tial external wastegate.

I'm trying to find out how much PSI I need to run to make ~225WHP. I've done a lot of searching but can't find too much info on a 42-trim turbo.


EDIT: well i think the person i was planning on buying the turbo from might have been wrong about the trim. i'm going to find out for sure and then get back to you guys on this thread.

Ive seen the tiny Civic Greddy turbo make 210 on a Y8 with a pea-shooter exhaust. ---- my dump tube was bigger than his exhaust.

42 trim? Are you sure it's not a 45 trim or a 50 trim, with a 42. A/R housing?

if so I'll just guess randomly and say at least 1 bar.

Why not just upgrade? If you're flat broke, maybe just switch over to a .63 turbine housing to give it a little help, but that's still a tiny compressor wheel you're working with.

If you really wanna go budget you can just source a 50 trim T3 compressor side and bolt it on, but no guarantees once you loosen that compressor nut and forgo straightening the turbine shaft. Or better yet, just source a small T4 (to4b) compressor side and never look back. ~$150> gets you 225whp without a doubt. If your current T3 is good, you can get a T4 coldside or blown T4 for like $100, pull the compressor side, get the turbine shaft out of your T3 straightened, buy a new piston ring, and toss it all back together without ever taking apart the bearing housing. Nice thing is you can clean off any coking that's built up on the back of the bearing housing between the heat shield too. Make sure to torque everything to factory specs and check tolerances with indicator if you really want it proper. Green loc-tite is your friend too.

I'll do a write up for you if you'd like and don't already know how to do it. If you've already got a good T3, you can make it a potent and reliable T4 for cheaper than you think. Or just upgrade it to a 50 trim or 60 trim T3 compressor side for really cheap, but may as well go T4 for only a tiny bit more $.

ya turns out that the person who was selling the exhaust thought the a/r ratio was the trim level... so ya not a 42 trim turbo

Im with crx2211 on this one. I once had a straight garrett t3 turbo from the junk yard. Little to no shaft play at all. I was planning on just running a straight t3 but than found a local guy was selling his turbonetics t3/t04e 46 trim /w broken shaft for $50. Pick it up and start disassembling it. Took the t4 whole front compressor side and mate it with my t3. I now have myself a cheap t3/t04e turbo for under $80. Put all my turbo stuff togather, throw it on my stock z6, went to tune it and made 235whp/205tq at 13 psi. I probably spend about $700 total on my kit including the tune.

My friend made 185-190whp on his a greddy turbo kit in a D16Y8. Stock boost at about 8psi. Stock exhaust.
185-190WHP and 150Lbs of Trq on a Dyno Dynamics.
