2001 GT 5.4 Litre 80MM Single Turbo Build

Hello all, I have just invested in a project car that I could use some insight on from anyone with a little turbo experience..

The Car is a 2001 GT Mustang, The engine is a 5.4 2 valve, origin of the engine is unknown. The bottom end of the engine has been built very well we believe, but at this point all we have is photos, the original owner passed away and the car was sold to the guy I bought it from. We have a little background on the car but not much.. The engine has all forged internals and we are thinking the car was being built to handle 750+ hp

There is a single 80mm turbo that was installed a little different to say the least, I already have decided that the location of the turbo will need to change.

I am confident that the bottom end of the engine is solid, but the top side is the question, I am not afraid to scrape the turbo setup and go charger if need be due to space limitations but that has yet to be decided. or go with a smaller setup.

Please take a look at the attached photos and tell me what you think, I would love some opinions from anyone with some turbo experience. will keep the thread updated with the progress

Thanks

That looks like a pretty sweet setup actually. what did you end up doing with it? As long as you don't mind cutting a hole in the bumper for an air filter to poke through its ideal because that turbo will radiate heat like crazy and being down away from things is nice. mine is between the block and the radiator and it works nice for my power level but your setup can handle a lot more which means a lot more heat in that turbo.

We actually scrapped the turbo setup and are going supercharger. This project was going to be more of a street car so we where not real pumped about venting the exhaust out the bumper. There really is no other way to do it in that body style. Not to mention an 80mm turbo is way over kill for a street setup so unless we are going to make some serious mods to the back, it would be way more of a pain in the ass than it was worth. We are converting to a supercharger which is proving to be costly but cleaner in the end. There is just no way to get the exhaust out of the back with a 5.4 litre in that car. I have seen it done on 05-09 but 99-04 I just don't see how it can be done. We are shooting for 700+ which in that car is still kind of nuts but I don't see any issues getting there. So if anyone needs some turbo parts, I have plenty haha. In the end, it will be a hopped up lightning in a 01 GT platform. Should be fun!

dang that sounds like a lot of fun. keep the turbo parts! maybe you'll want to turbo into the supercharger ;) yeah that definitely would have been intense for a street car. I just have my downpipe dump under the body right by the passenger front tire lol. I used to have full length exhaust but it was too quiet for me.

I have never worked on the 99-04 so ill take your word about the exhaust. but dang that motor with a blower should be tons of fun. I would have preferred the power delivery of a blower for my street car but the cost was prohibitive for me to do that. I got my turbo for 350 lol and did all the fab myself. let us know how it works!

Just did a borg warner S480 on a LS 6.0 liter and the spool was excellent. Power was just over 1000 wheel on E85.

epic. I love this stuff and people like you who know how to make it happen. do you have any info on that build? I'm interested in boost for my c5 corvette. if there is any applicable information that may help me when the time is available I would be thankful.
