Default 1991 CRX Si - Help Me Design A Turbo

OK, Im sure that this has been asked a million times already, but here goes...

I have a 1991 CRX Si
My rods are knocking in the 203,000+ mile stock D16A6
I want to order a ZC from nyblock.com for $649 (any reason why I should not?)
I want to build a turbo for this car/motor

I have no clue what turbo to get, but would like to buy one off of eBay because of pricing. Please advise what turbo (brand/model) and what ratio I should go for.

I am planning to use the Starion Intercooler.
I am planning to use Eclipse 450cc injectors.

Im not sure about engine management, but would like to keep costs minimal. I am thinking the way of the V-AFC hack. I drive a lot so I want something that is somewhat reliable on the highway.

My Goals:
I want to run low 14s to high 13s. I do not mind gutting the car, this will not be a daily driver.
I guess I am more concerned with top end power than bottom end. My car has always seemed to have problems hooking up anyway, so coupled with having a crappy suspension, I think more low end power will only contribute to wheel spin. Therefore I am placing my emphasis on top end power.

My true reason for wanting to build this setup is that my dad has always teased me for driving Honda vehicles. He is a true redneck and has a 1988 S-10 with a 350. At the track it ran a 14.7 @ 97 but never hooked up. I expect it does much better than that with traction. He only made 2 passes. He also owns a C4 Corvette and his S-10 eats it on the highway. I want to race him and beat him in my Honda, which will probably require that I race him for at least 1 mile on the highway. Hopefully after that I will have no more interest in dumping $$$ into my little CRX

(btw, I am not looking for theoretically 1/4 times, speeds, etc. If you want to give me this info please give me tested and real data)

Should I use the stock ECU or go for one with a higher rev limiter to take advantage of top end?

Will my Si intake fit the ZC or do I need to use an intake from a ZC?

One more variable. I have a brand new ZEX kit that I have not installed. Is this even worth fooling with? Should I sell it or try to use both, without having to build the lower end in the ZC?

BTW, my best pass in bone stock form with Drag Radials was 16.1 @ 83, is there any hope of beating him?

Thanks for your help!

I would go with a ZC turbo, using a AFC hack, Starion front mount w/ 450cc injectors. Use the PG7 ecu (88-89 teg 5speed) for the ZC, it works decent.

For turbo, I would say the 14b Mitsubishi DSM turbo should be just fine for your application,

Its nearly a mirror setup to my old ZC/Turbo, it ran perfect until I cranked the boost up to much. (15+psi)

How fast will this be? well that varys, I hit a 13.5 in race trim, (slightly gutted) with drag radials. But daily driven it was a easy high 13sec car. Only running 6-8psi.

Will it be safe?

Yes you should be fine, but I highly recommend tuning the car on the dyno.

Can you use the SI intake manifold? No, and you would not want to use it even if you could, it has smaller runners than the ZC.

Zex kit?
sell it, or not go turbo, and just run the kit with your zc, you should get similar results, with the normal bolt ons.

16.1 @ 83 with drag radials?

you are having some launching problems, because you should be able to do alot better.

Jeff thanks for the advice. I had heard that CRX Si is supposed to perform better in the 1/4 mile. I had no experience at the track and went by myself so I really didnt know what I was doing. Looking back I am guessing that I had it reved up too high before my launch, while holding at 3.5k-4k. My RTs were very good and consistent, just cruddy ETs. I really only barely spun the drag radials as well, I didnt try to burn them off or anything. Just turn em over about 5-10 times, which I dont know if that is correct either.

I am going to try the setup you suggest and I will photodocument everything, so that others may benefit.

Thanks for taking the time to build this site.

Actually I went to Harbor Freight and bought a 26" Hole Saw that will fit on my drill. I am planning to align the drill bit right where the hub is and that should give me a pretty clean cut. It should leave me with about 1" on either side of the rims.

Do you think they will rub?

I haven't figured out what I am going to do on the front wheels yet, since the 24s are taller than the fenders. I was thinking of cutting out the sides of a 55 gallon drum and welding them to the fenders to give me the additional clearance I will need.

I called Mickey Thompson yesterday and ordered a set of 24" drag slicks. I had to lie and tell them it was for Tractor Pulls, otherwise I dont think they were going to sell them to me, as they said they wouldn't fit on a Honda.

Hehe
