14b Fucked...... Suggestions....

Hello, I put on a 14b onto my ZC last summer with lots of thanks going out to you guys for all the help with my beginner questions. I had the turbo on the car for about a week before I had to park it for the winter. Before it went away, I noticed I was loosing boost. The max I was able to get out of it was 1 psi before I parked it. Upon further inspection of the turbo, I noticed that some of the fins on the turbo were missing pieces (the fins that are driven by the exhaust). The turbo was newly rebuit before it was put onto the car. I took it to a rebuild shop, and they quoted me $450CND to fix this, the guy told me that it must have been something from the engine that could have done this. Now my engine is also newly rebuilt for the turbo so I find it hard to believe its that. So my question is, what else could have caused this to happen?? What are my options?? I think the guys at the turbo shop are trying to rape me with the $450 price tag. Or do you guys think it is reasonable. Oh ya, I also had a gasket made from shitty sheet metal used in body repairs from canadian tire, to go inbetween the turbo and adapter plate. Could the metal have flaked off and caused this problem?? Anyhow, I am now stuck and dont know what to do, please give me some advice.

Chris

Seperate the turbo from the adapter plate and look at your "gasket." MTL that is what caused the problem. Hot melted pieces of metal hitting the fins likely destroyed your turbo. Sorry, but using low grade steel as a gasket on an exhaust component was pretty dumb. Live and learn though.

$340 US to replace a wheel and rebalance? Yes, that is indeed a ripoff. Unless they're replacing the entire center cartridge with a ball bearing model and even then, I wouldn't pay that. You can find brand new T3's for $350 US all over the place.
