Default 14b disassembly/rebuild

i got a 14b a lil while back, but i'm not sure if it's gonna need a rebuild or not (its got a lil shaft play, not too bad though, blades aren't touching the housing or anything, and a couple lil cracks in the exhaust housing but not around the wastegate flapper or anything. definitely nothing big enough to cause boost leak. where can i get a relatively cheap rebuild kit, new seals and all.

also, how do i go about disassembling the turbo? i need to disconnect the compressor housing from the exhaust housing, but i'm afraid i'll do it wrong and ---- up my turbo. do i disconnect the bolts at the end of the turbine shaft, by the blades? or do i just have to unbolt the little belt-lookin thing in between them?

Default Re:14b disassembly/rebuild

ok... a lil shaft play on a dry turbo is normal. because there is no oil taking up the space between the bearings/bushings.
if the blades hit the compressor/turbine w/ a lil force from pushing to the side then it's time for a rebuild.

you can take the housings off but you cannot disassamble the rotating part w/o having it rebalanced. these things spin very fast and they need to be balanced after being taken apart/rebuilt.

is this something you can do by yourself.... i doubt it, but i may be wrong.

alot of people "CLOCK" their turbo (turning one of the housings) to get the turbo to fit better in their application. this doesn't require balancing.

the ring that your talking about is what holds the turbine on.... loosen/remove that, rotate, and retighten.

just remember: DO NOT LOOSEN/ REMOVE THE NUT THAT HOLDS THE COMPRESSOR/TURBINE WHEELS ON!!!! or then you have to send it out to get balanced

hope this helps,
mike
