*NOOB QUESTION* Concerning 14b...

This is a noob question, but I would like some help.

I was looking at picking up a 14b from a friend for use on my d16y8, but I've read the wastegate is set at 9psi on them. I don't know if this is too high for daily driving, can you turn the boost lower than 9psi by messing with the wastegate, or using a boost controller, or can you only make it higher? Thanks in advance.

I believe that you can change it, I think that right now it just means (if what you are saying is correct) that at 9psi the wastegate will open and start letting flow through, I would get a boost controller and if you worried about the wastegate or being able to boost higher then do an external wastegate.

manual boost controller is easiest way to boost more, and you can cut off part of the rod going to the wastegate and reweld it to lower the amount of boost before the wastegate opens.

i also would think about doing the adjustable actuator arm method, i think thats somewhere on this site homepage

lowering boost by extending to rod or wahter is ok, but it does create lag time, either get a different waste gate actuator, or run what its set at, 9 psi is fine for dailyr driving, you'll probly wana run more :)

I have an IHI RHB5 but with the amount of lag I have, without a boost controller I never see the full 7psi that the wastegate is supposed to open at. Without the controller it peaks at about 6psi so I use the MBC to get the boost up to about 8. So chances are, you might not even make that full 9psi.

have u by chance rotated the compressor housing of your turbo? that would account for not seeing the whole 7psi, since the rod would be stretching more than it should be. you can solve this by drilling new mounting points on the wastegate bracket, i think i saw something on this on this forum.

I used a 14b on my A6 with the stock actuator and I didnt turn the compressor housing and I dont think I ever hit 8psi. It just hung around 7-71/2. I say just run whatever the wastegate is set at. by extending the arm your creating so much lag.
