***update*** a stupid question about vtec and turbo's

i searched around and could find anything on this:
i have a 91 hatch with a b16 and a turbo kit. 2.5" dp-2.25" exhaust system going threw an OBX fart can :P. when i was running a open dp the car sounded really good and was loud (duh). ok i hooked up the exhaust (was very surprized at how quiet this thing is now) and now i cant hear vtec engaging :'(. i was just woundering if u guys can still hear urs with the turbo on and full exhaust. i dont care if i can hear it just woundering if it is still engaging.

Re: a stupid question about vtec and turbo's

The turbo is acually quites down the exhast acts likes like a resonator. Now is it acually quite or are you just used to really loud? 2.25 is kinda small for a turbo b16 I wont run anything under 2.5 for a d and 3 inch for a b16 especally if its crush bend ;)

Re: a stupid question about vtec and turbo's

yeah its crush bent,it was just what was on the car and i dont have money to redo it right now :( . i kinda like it now the way it is (the quietness) all u can hear is the turbo spooling up and then the wg opening. it just didnt pull very good in 4th now, and thats why i thought maybe i had no vtec, could be the exhaust tho, im only at 5.5 psi tho :-\

Re: a stupid question about vtec and turbo's

or maybe i have a crappy turbo that drops off up high, maybe the turbo just isnt efficient(sp) at higher rpms ??? its a t3 48/60 dont know what trim the wheel is but its from down2turbo on ebay, and he was selling this turbo as a super 60 and people have measured the wheel and said that it isnt. so i dont know

Your exhaust is the problem....

Re: a stupid question about vtec and turbo's

goto kteller.com they have 3" mandrel exhaust systems for like 250. you'll notice a world of difference

Re: a stupid question about vtec and turbo's

i bought a 2 1/2" mandrel exhaust, no catalytic, straight thru muffler at a muffler shop bout 2 months ago thinking it was the best thing in the world. it's way louder than the stock one. car is a 99'si b16 turbo. is 2 1/2" good? i read at turbod16.com that 3" would be for over 300hp.

^^^ your good unless its built to the nuts and your running big boost 2.5 manderal is about the same as 3inch crush ;)

Re: a stupid question about vtec and turbo's

aight str8, neuther my car or me are built, we both have stock internals. ::) i'm just running 11psi

Re: **update** a stupid question about vtec and turbo's

ok i have been having a problem for sometime now with the temp guage, and i think that might be causing my prob... i watched it tonight and when u are climing in the rpms the guage will start to drop.and right when vtec is supposed to come on the guage just shoots down showing the car not to be warmed up. now ur car has to be at like somewhere arouind 80 deg. for vtec to operate(so i have heard). so if the guage is reading the car to be not warmed up = no vtec? or does the ecu read the sensor out on the motor(under the dist.) either way i think that sensor might be screwed up and causing my problem. any thoughts?

Re: ***update*** a stupid question about vtec and turbo's

my VTEC kicks in before the car is at normal operating temps. it kicks in after 3 minutes of the car running, and that is not normal operating temperature. the car is a 99'si.

Yeah i was having that prob as well cept not boosting... replace your TW sensor or whatever that is... it'll fix it.

Re: ***update*** a stupid question about vtec and turbo's

i don't hear it with the turbo anymore (VTEC) but i definately feel it and the rpms go up faster after vtec. i can see it also on the dyno result print out, after vtec the power goes way up. just get a good feel of the car and you'll be able to feel it. i know what you're saying. that louder exhaust tone kicking in real fast. it'll be harder to notice and feel also cause now your car is making way more power before vtec. i strongly doubt there's anything wrong w/your vtec.

Re: ***update*** a stupid question about vtec and turbo's

I put a green LED light on my guage pod wired directly to the VTEC solenoid just next to my boost guage. This way I know for sure its working. Then again...I have a D-series so I can't hear it or hardly feel it anyways ::)

Re: ***update*** a stupid question about vtec and turbo's

so if my guage is dancing around could this affect my vtec?or is there a sensor for the guage and a sensor for the ecu to read temp?

Re: ***update*** a stupid question about vtec and turbo's

For whatever its worth, i think its a BAD idea to be revving the engine high enough for VTEC to crossover before the engine is warmed up.. not being very friendly to your pistons or valves

there are two sensors afaik. I dont have a diagram handy but im fairly certain.
the dinky ass looking one under the big rad hose by the dizzy is the gauge sensor, I believe the more substantial looking sensor next to it is for the ecu.

Unbolt your exhaust and take it for a spin. my money is on you hear and feel vtec.

Re: ***update*** a stupid question about vtec and turbo's

well my exhaust broke tonight where i had it tacked together. and it was like night and day. i could hear vtec(i know its working now ::)) and the power gain was crazy. i guess i was just restricting(sp)the turbo 2 much. it runs way better now.

so my vtec wont work since my speedo is broken

Re: ***update*** a stupid question about vtec and turbo's

Nopes no speedo no vtec. unles your ecu is chipped and you vtec speed check dissabled.

Re: ***update*** a stupid question about vtec and turbo's

If its just the speedo gauge itself it will probably still work but if its the sensor then it won't.

I'm thinking you might have a bad thermostat and that's why your temp drops when you give her ----.
