Wings

Does anyone here have any usefull information on homemade wings. I have to build two of them. They can't be super heavy, and must be fuctional. I was thinking carbon, fiberglass, or even sheet alunimun all depending on cost, weight and ease of building. I searched around google and couldn't find anything useful.

Thanks
Randy

Functional? Are you putting them on the front?

The plan is to add downforce to the front and some in the back also. I think more vertical boards in the rear to help side to side stability. The back end does get pretty light at speed over the bumps, so some downforce would be good.

PS this is a racecar never street driving (one time maybe, 3:30am the night before a race)

And how fast do actually think you are going with this?

Re: Wings

Well last year make 232 to the wheels with a stupid ew3 turbo setup and a crap gear splits in the tranny we would hit a top speed of about 120-130 down the longest straight. This year we will be making a ton more power with a b18a and some boost, horsepower rating are not going to be until about november.

Track conditions
1 mile - 1.25 mile long track
1 minute lap times are fast
so average speed is about 70 mph
top about 120-130
10-14 turns
1 long straight
a couple kinks
on a frozen lake
running 26.5 inch tall tires with studs

So most of our time is in the turns, and we will have a ton of power to pull drag down the straight. I know we will have to do some testing before the balance is right (all done with lap times)

I just thought that you guys that can weld and fab stuff would have some insight.

You can buy wings for cheap

Non will net you any difference for your power level or atmosphere though

Re: Wings

I was think more like a sprint car wing. Something big to put a little pressure down at 90 mph in a four wheel drift at 8,000 rpm. It would be one more thing that I can tune on. Changing conditions and fuel load require something more then what I have. Watch a sprint car vs a midget, look at the lap times, you will then see a reason for this topic. It's not a pipe dream, and I will figure out a way by January 6th, first points race.

Re: Wings

I would think model airplane websites would have more info on functional wings that you could scale up. I dont think this website appreciates real racing. Power level has nothing to do with cornering grip and it sounds like you are definitely going fast enough to need downforce expecially on ice.

This was my third race two years ago, before turbo :'( This slide was at about 65 mph. Please note that this was before it's newest paint job. The car was painted like a pumkin at midnight on halloween, before the Dirty-jack rally-x. The stupid car finshed 2nd overall with about 30 cars there. 2nd day I had the car.

2nd gear slow turns can be fun too

New paint, turbo, and some say there is no traction on ice, please note back inside tire.

This picture was taken from the back of the pacecar. That big ugly truck was Jesse James ice cream truck. It was a fun weekend with the heli flying over head. Look at some of the cars my little 1.5 can hang with (can't wait until the 1.8 goes in). I should have started 2nd but they just pushed me back behide the icecream truck. It doesn't matter I pasted both the truck and Subru going into turn 1 (old kart racing trick).

I just don't see any wings and I think it maybe a advantage. I can't go down to a local checker-napa-walmart-advanced auto parts and get some thing that works. I found some sprint car wing builders about two hours away. But they are big money, and I don't have cubic dollars, but cubic tools.

Those splitters aren't going to work for my club's rules and my co-driver's driving style. Which is hit the biggest snow bank on the whole track (1-4 feet) during practice.

Re: Wings

yea i just realized that.. lol its not worth investing time and effort into something on the front only to have it ripped off the first time u hit a bank..

i had a shitbox civic wagon i used to go ice racing with.. but i did it for shits and giggles.. not for competition.. and i remember spinning out a couple times :P

i saw some paseo owners get rid of the stock front bumper and replace the entire thing with something they fabbed up.. with splitters and all..

Re: Wings

I love it!!! Pikes peak guys are crazy.

I started think about the rules and what they really say. Bumpers must appear like stock or removed. It doesn't say anything about how far it can stick out. If I make my already 2 inch square bumper under the plastic shell, and extend it out a foot or two. Then I can maybe mount something like this. http://www.speedwaymotors.com/xq/asp...qx/Product.htm

This maybe cheaper just to buy and worry about mounting and within the rules.

You should remove your rear bumper to reduce drag :)

YES
i love the ghetto factor but sometimes its taken too far here on HMT...

i dont see why a small nascar-esque wing or something like the one on the new Audi TT wouldnt increase downforce a decent amount... the audi wing is advertised to make more downforce over 70 mph. maybe you could read up on aerodynamics a bit and recreate the wing to make more downforce at the speeds youll mostly be racing at, or cornering.

i plan on making my own front lip like i saw done somewhere on here. you buy all the parts at home depot its rubber and should give like 2" of ground clearance depending how lowered you are. does anyone remember this thread and can you post the link?

Re: Wings

FWD on ice? as you say, you can't put wings in the front and if you increase downforce in the back you'll actually lose stability... i'd much rather look into a 4wd wagon for cheap or trade, and put that d series turbo engine in it.
And then add wings and such.

iceracercrx 08-12-2006 08:04 PM

Re: Wings

I know that I need a wing up front. I have a good idea what I need to do. Now doing it will be the hard part. I talked to so other road racers and they told me to just put one big wing on top. Then I can move it front to back to get the cars balance right. I is fun because these tires have a ton of grip, there isn't that much tire spin coming out of the fast corners, maybe a little in the slow stuff. Front wheels are both spinning at the same speed, thank you Miller wire feed.

I will let you guys know what I come up with

Now I don't know what you guys are talking about. There is a Dodge SRT-4 in the front row and there was a subru in the sencond row.

Re: Wings

If you arent getting any wheel spin and the it looks like the back end is sliding out a lot in those pics. I dont think downforce in the rear would hurt at all until you figure out what all you want to do with the front.
