My son and I built this air car for his 5th grade science project. Got first place in his school and 2nd place for the Arizona State Science Fair.

It's not complete in this photo, I have a better one at home. You can watch the videos below to see more of it.

Hehe, everyone asks that. Actually more than you'd think. I made him learn to weld, electrical, pneumatics, even made him learn to use CAD a little so he could help with drawings.

Here's a better completed pic of the car. Not sure what to do with it now, it just sits under a cover. Doesn't really drive far enough to play with much. Gets lot of looks tho. Need to strap a high pressure welding tank on this sucker.

Thats awesome.

Get a few welding or scuba tanks and you could get some decent distance out of that thing.

This is my 53 chevy i chopped it 4 inches in the front and 6 in the rear, i cut the back window out and rotated it 180 deg. and put it 2 inches higher in the roof so i could see out of it. All of the back part of the roof was made by me on an english wheel. I plan on frenching the headlights, pie cut and lenghthen the rear quarters, and im going to do a triagular 4link with airbags.

well dont just let it sit there. you gotta figure out a way to up the distance, and top speed.
gearing, and add something that will ease the resistance on the crank at the hardest spot for it to turn around. looks like its when its fully extanded you could use like magnets or some thing to help it back around.

crxrx7 05-24-2008 01:27 AM

Re: The "What do you Fab other then turbo stuff" Thread

Ya I think with just gearing you could go farther by just going faster with the same amount of air. How does that thing turn. Does it want to tip if you turn too sharp?

Re: The "What do you Fab other then turbo stuff" Thread

Or add some kind of flywheel to it :)

This is a pic from a couple years ago at the Frederick Co Fair. I'm not pictured, but my racing partner (pretty much brother in law too) is, he's the one getting lapped lol. That guy on the gray mower is Tank.. he's like 300+ lbs.

Im really thinking of doing a blow through on the 235 inline 6. I'd have to do some stupid low psi (2 3 max) because these motorz were'nt built to hold alot of powar,

I have like 6-7 retired fire dept SCBA bottles. I think they are for 2400psi. They are to heavy to economically ship though.

qsiguy 06-10-2008 03:58 AM

Re: The "What do you Fab other then turbo stuff" Thread

Forgot about this thread... Ya it's got brakes but you don't want to have to use them in an emergency! Just bike brakes on the rear tire connected to the brake pedal in front. I've been looking for a cheap scuba tank compressor to fill small welding/scuba tanks. A high pressure tank like that would increase the range of this think tremendously. Problem is that it's a pain in the butt to go get them refilled. Yes, it can be a bit unstable in a sharp turn if the weight isn't distributed properly at higher speeds.

Too many other projects right now but eventually we want to make a 2nd generation model, super light, more pressure/capacity, single seat. Have many ideas, including ways to utilize regenerative braking a little, lower for stability tho still three wheeled.

krustindumm 06-11-2008 01:34 AM

Re: The "What do you Fab other then turbo stuff" Thread

scba tanks are the same as the short scuba tanks, located in IA if you're interested.
