Welding stainless
So Im using my dads wire feed mig. Its a 75/25 mix, and i think that it has .030 wire, but I dont know for sure. . So the other day, I was wondering if I could weld some Aluminized Steel pipe to it? So I said ---- it ill give it a try. If I ---- it up oh well I just buy a new wastegate flange. I was told that this mig was set up for welding steel. So cleaned them bolth up real well on the wire wheel and I gave it a shot and it it turned out good. Im just wondering if now once I hook everthing up if its gona fall apart. Im new to this whole welding thing but I can get some half way descent beads.

Re: Welding stainless
As long as there is good penetration it'll probably be fine. Be aware though that wastegates put a lot of stress on a single pipe and need a decent amount of metal layed down. Put some gussets on it if you worried. |
Re: Welding stainless
stainless is kinda funny though.....your not really supposed to even use filler rod when welding stainless with a tig welder...your supposed to kinda let it combine itself and then use the filler where you burn through.....so i dont know about mig welding it....doesnt sound like the best idea .......i would imagine it would work fine though...probably wouldnt want to build something to support myself with that though..not that you are

i hope you aren't a certified welder. |
Re: Welding stainless
i am not a certified welder.....ill look into that....

i hope you aren't a certified welder. What about orbital welding, where the there is no gap, etc, etc. How do those welds stack up? Are they the same thickness as the material being welded? |

Re: Welding stainless
im not being a jerk but i dont believe you.....my veteran nuclear something or other welder for the navy teacher told me this and showed me how to do it on a manifold....so you little patches or whatever you have...dont mean ---- to me...im gonna trust my genius welding teacher

Re: Welding stainless
I trust my welds. If it falls off I will let you know. Little experiment. HF Cast Iron manifold to Aluminized Steel pipe to stainless steel wastegate flange. Going to heat the ---- out of the manifold with Acetylene Oxygen then atempt to weld to it. O0

Re: Welding stainless
ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT PULSE WELDING? "Certified welder" is a term that gets thrown around a lot. You usually get certified per job and it expires when you're done with that job.
ps i don't want this to piss off anyone who knows what the hell they're talking about. |
Re: Welding stainless
Its a ------- wastegate tube not a rocket ship. Just ------- weld it.

well said

Hey, that is the most important weld on a manifold. ;) |

ps i don't want this to piss off anyone who knows what the hell they're talking about. Heres the proof. "Pulse welding" is a pulsed current. "Certified Welder" maybe thrown around where they breed retards like you. http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r...eeze/certs.jpg |

so you went through the trouble of removing your last name up top but left it on the bottom? :P

Re: Welding stainless
My .02 as a current tig student is you defintly need filler for plate and such. thin wal exaust tubing if its stainless i think u can just fuse them with out filler but thats just a guess from what i learned so far. i can tell u that if u used regular mig wire on stainless pipe the weld bead will rust and the rust will kida ------ out a few inches down the tube from the weld. it should hold i think just dont expect it to last for ever.
