welding rebar for a steering wheel

woot woot, i'm back. god damn that was a long week.
i've read that you shouldn't weld rebar, but i'm wondering if it would be ok to weld it for a steering wheel.

all i need to do is butt weld the ends together to form the circle and then weld some steel flat stock to it to connect to the hub.
it just has to hold up to normal driving conditions, won't be racing or anything like that, but i'd hope it doesn't break off in a crash or something like that.

i'm probably just gonna use some 1/2" tube, but i saw some rebar at homedeopt and started thinking that would be cool.

i imagine it would take a bit of heat to make it a circle... and even then it might not be that round. it would also be pretty heavy and not very friendly to someone's face in an accident. but if you're making if for someone you hate, then go for it.

Just buy a hoop from a concrete supplier, trim to get the ends to match up, weld, grind the burrs, do whatever else to connect to the hub, then chrome that bitch!

rebar is pretty much pot metal, good luck welding it. Why not just find some junk wheel that would look less mexicant?

i always knew rebar to be high carbon steel, being it IS used in structural support..?

it's normally carbon steel.

It's a615 low carbon mild steel. It can be welded. I haven't read D1.4 recent enough to remember but it likes the correct filler and pre heat.

the rebar would be covered before install. so it wouldn't look mexicant.
i'm not worried about bending it, just wondering if the welds would hold up enough to used a wheel.

brine: i am going for a specific look, a junk wheel wouldn't have this look.

thanks guys
i think i'm just gonna use some tubing. the rebar is not gonna be as easy as i wanted.

might want to check with the DMV too. alot of states such things as steering wheels are illegal. itd suck to get in a wreck or get a ticket, only to get a massive fine and or sued ontop of it lol
