welding manifold on car
is it safe to weld a manifold while its on the motor in the car? i have one leak in my manifold right on the back of the plate i was gona try to get it welded somewher, just a 1" bead, then i thought maybe hooking up a welder to it on the car would fry some/all the electronics ?

Re: welding manifold on car
i read on one of jeff's build pages that he welded his downpipe while it was in the car, shouldnt ---- anything up.
i hear only if you stand barefoot in a puddle while you do it tho. |

Re: welding manifold on car
Unhook your battery, and hook the welding ground directly to the manifold, and you will be fine.

Re: welding manifold on car
you could always unhook your computer too.....
|
Re: welding manifold on car
I've always welded stuff on the car. Never had a problem.
|
Re: welding manifold on car
I only think the only way you could have problems is if you clamped the ground on one of your harness grounds or something of that nature. Just do like they say. Electricity take the path of least resistence. Clamp it close.

But you're wrong! BRIOHATCH is the god of welding and knows everything about TIG welding stainless He must be right on this one...... ---- nut |
Re: welding manifold on car
Just unhook the bat, and the ecu. But I welded on my car last week with everything hooked up and had no problems.

Re: welding manifold on car
sorry nig nog, what was i thinking
BRIOHATCH :bows down: |
Re: welding manifold on car
i always thought that when you weld on a car just make sure the path from your ground and your electrode just cant have any electrical circuts in between. if your welding current dosnt pass through anything youll never have a prob, battery hooked up or not, i would imagine. but not knowing 100% i just unhook it anyways, but theoretically you dont have to.

Re: welding manifold on car
i usually only unhook it when i am removing the battery, or engine
|
Re: welding manifold on car
I always thought that welding created a large magnetic field . I never looked into it and I have never taken out my computer when welding on the car, but I always stayed away from it (it's under the hood) incase the field could damage it.

Re: welding manifold on car
you can weld on that fucker all day long. computer, battery and every other damn thing you want plugged in.no current is flowing through your computer or anything else. you are jumping an arc from your frame (negative) to gour welding lead (positive) you will not harm a thing.

Play it safe...unhook the battery and ground close to what you're welding (directly to it if possible). It can't hurt to unhook the ECU, but it should have it "out of the loop" when you unhook the battery...at least that's my logic. |
Re: welding manifold on car
unhooking the battery will have no effect. the ecu is still grounded to the car even when the battery is unhooked. i have welded plenty of times without any problems, but if you are that worried abuot it then unplug it. im sure most of us have our ecu's sitting on the floor anyway. thats where mine spends most of its time

Re: welding manifold on car
I heard if you TIG on your engine when the ECU is hooked up it will make your car faster. I think that's true cuz my buddy did some TIG on his crx and its runnin 9's and beat a ferarri.

didnt you know? my toyota ran 14.3 with full stick welded exhaust O0 |
Re: welding manifold on car
damn, i gotta get a bottle of gas for my mig, betwen the tiged charge pipes and a miged exhaust i should be dipping into the 11's
