Welding a gas tank
Anyone have any experience welding gas tanks? Mine has separated slightly at the pinch seam. I think its just stamped steel. I tried JB weld and epoxy the ---- out of it but it still drips when its full. So, can I do this in the car without A) causing a fire or B) causing an explosion? Or is it just better to remove it?

Re: Welding a gas tank
DO NOT WELD YOUR TANK ON THE CAR.
remove tank, empty fuel, let it sit for a couple days, use a hose to connect an exhaust from another car into the tank, and let it fill with exhaust, then weld only when the exhaust is running through the tank to displace all oxygen inside the tank. |
Re: Welding a gas tank
They make a tank patch designed to be applied while on the car and filled with gas still.

Re: Welding a gas tank
fill overflowing with water. clean it, more warter. then weld it.

Re: Welding a gas tank
i like the exhaust gas method. but its a little harder than just filling with water and emptying. finding a hose and all that.
but really, i bet they sell gas tank patches for stuff like this. |
Re: Welding a gas tank
Alright, thanks for the input guys. I think I'll look into a patch kit. I really want to repair it in the car because its a saddle tank that sits over my rear steering gear(4WS).

Re: Welding a gas tank
none of the gastank repair kits worked on my wifes 64 fairlane.
we were gonna weld it up, but figured if we fix this leak it's just gonna leak somewhere else next week. we got a new tank. |
Re: Welding a gas tank
If its leaking in one spot, you will fix it only to find more leaks... way safer to get a new one if its cheap man

Re: Welding a gas tank
eff that.
get some sheet metal and make a new one. |
Re: Welding a gas tank
Dont be a hero and try to repair the 60 dollar gas tank. Just buy a new one.

Re: Welding a gas tank
This is a no bullshit story, an old timer I know would just weld them up in the car. fill the tank all the way up with gas he would use oxyacetlyne and braze that ----. I was pretty nerovuse when I saw him do it but it can be done.

Re: Welding a gas tank
hang a bucket under the leak, than a small pump that can be hooked up to a switch and to 12v and route it back to your tank.

Re: Welding a gas tank
i had a leak in a former EK i had. Dropped the tank and had it hot tanked for like 10 min. This way it didn't eat the undercoating on it. Washed it out with water, flame checked it, then went to town. Any decent automotive machine shop should have a hot tank.

Neighboor's vette up the street had a dealer install some blah axle back exhaust. They screwed a bracket through his tank. Took him a week to realize why he was running out of gas. |
Re: Welding a gas tank
I lowcentered my blazer once, punctured the tank... JB welded it WITRH gas init and never had a problem with it again

Re: Welding a gas tank
I had a project in welding class in high school where my teacher had me weld a tank on his son's '72 chevy pick up. I got an A in that class and am still alive. Fill the tank completly and have extra gas to make sure your gas leve is well above the hole. Tack weld a piece of mild steel over it then weld it all the way around atleast twice to make sure your not leaking. Remember liquid automotive gasoline won't burn and kill your bitch ass. Throwing sparks into the vapors will.

Re: Welding a gas tank
We burned a van down at work ------- around like that (I can elaborate if really needed) and I made a 2 gallon tank from a 1 gallon tank when I was 12 trying that ----. Either take it out and clean the ---- out of it so there isnt any vapors left or buy a new tank.
