welding fire wall
 

i need to know if i can weld my fire wall with it being as thin of metal as it is with a mig. ive read that i can just drop down in size of my wire. is this true?

use .023 wire in your mig ;)

Start on the lowest setting and see how that works. If you don't burn through after doing a couple spots, kick it up a notch and see if that burns through. I welded ---- to my floor pan and the actual body skin and some places are really thin, but still do-able.

i did have it on the lowest setting and i blew through :-\ i guess i have to go get some smaller wire.

Yeah welding thin metal like that is very tricky. I removed my sidemoldings and emblems etc. on my Integra and welded filler plates to fill the holes and it just wanted to burn through. Not to mention if your not careful the heat will warp the door panels (found out the hard way :-[) but on a firewall you might be safe. Depending on what your welding to the firewall, you might be able to just do multiple small tack welds in different spots.

also depends on were your welding, if its a spot with two pieces of metal with factory seam sealer in between, it will blow through and look like ---- no matter what. I had that in a few spots on the floor of my awd civic conversion. I found spot welding it the whole way and then going over it with a bead worked best for those spots.

Why are you welding your firewall?

It's not too hard, you just have to go slow and do short welds moving from area to area to ensure no panels get warped. I just finished shaving my Rain Gutters yestarday without any problems or serious burn throughs.

im welding it because im in the middle of shaving/wire tucking my engine bay.

Well then it really shouldn't be too hard. eKeep you wire speed high, and you heat low and you should be fine. for something like filling bolt holes and shaving, penatration isn't an issure, just get the weld to stick, grinfd it flush and you'll be fine. The should have to be any structurial welds like removing the whole firewall like me or frame parts. Just adding metal.

are you riunning a 110v?what sheilding gas?
so i guess your running .035 ? try uping the gas and the wire just a hair, then try holding the tip closer to the metal and more perindicular, then hold the triger untill you get a small circlular spot then stop. Go by ear it will let you know what is happening
