Welding crank to Pully? WORKED, FIXED, PICS!!

8 Attachment(s)
I wanted to start a new thread cause the old one was old as hell and now fixed as of last night. To sum it up without all the reading....

My crank pully broke off. Left the bolt in the crank. Extracted the bolt to see the key way of the crank pretty chipped.

The question is.. Can these two metals be welded together? I think the pully is cast iron and the crank steel I guess. Heres the original thread with pics.

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/forum/...hp?topic=88634

UPDATE!!

So we go ahead and weld it up. Adam puts a weld on the key just to hold it in place.. Well the weld was big so the bold would not even go in the hole. Oh ----.. So he chips at it and the weld does not want to break. Screw it.. He welds a right around the whole thing. So Now I have 60 miles on it and its fine. There is some vibration coming from it.I assume the balance is now off at the crank and pully. My own thoughts are its going to eventually destroy the bottom end. Do I care, no. It was absolutely the best fix at the time. I am going to go all out on this car with a the original motor. Or the head at least if it does not go down with the ship. I took a video of it but I need to install vista to snag it off my camera. So should be up in the next few days.

Yes it will work. not sure how the balance will be on it but ----, its worth a shot.

I think it was Sinner on here, or maybe somebody else, but they JB welded the keyway. I would try that before I welded the pulley right on.

Re: Welding crank to Pully?

I welded the key into the slot once, because it had broken a chunk out of the crank. It was either gamble on welding it in or take the motor out and apart to replace the crank. What's to lose?

It held up until I took the car to PepBoys for a cheap strut replacement, and they blew my motor.

I wouldn't use JB weld, because if you do that and it doesn't work, you'll be in all kinds of hell trying to grind it out so you can put a real weld on there.

im sure with a little grinding here and there you could balance that ---- out, all trial and error tho

Yeah one bit was broken doing it. Took about 15 minutes cause we we bullshitting. Took another 15 to weld up. I am pretty happy with the results.

Its pretty loud right now. Im not even trying to go into vtak :X

lol i hate brake rotor screws i was taking them off and the harbor gay frieght impact screw driver bit just broke inside one of the screws so i tried welding a blot to it and and unscrew it =fail
then drill taht took too long!!
thne i got a grinder and grinded the ---- out of the rotor cuz i was swaping in som other ones anyways car these werwe so badly worped
anyway good luck hope that sucker dont come flying off on you.. if it dose you should weld a single pully on there so u can run your alt.. lol or loose it completely and runa a magneto and carburator.. lol jk

Re: Welding crank to Pully? WORKED, FIXED, PICS!!

Trouble with welding is that the heat usually fucks the oil pump seal then there is no way to change it. I bought a 1/2" reverse twist drillbit for drilling the bolts out. You put the drill on reverse and it cuts 'cause the drillbit is made backwards. usually from the heat and vibration of drilling it will eventually catch and the broken off nub will come out. I've done this for a couple of customers. The bolt is quite hard so it's important to get a good quality drillbit. No made in china crap or you'll be sharpening it all day long. Ok to weld for a winter beater and it does work. I've done this on a few beaters to drive them to the scrapyard.

as much as i'd like to see it last, i dont see your motor living to long. if you can feel the vibration, its REAL bad. good luck though

You should take it into honda for a timing belt :P

...do you have another motor waiting to be finished or something, because if you donit you better start looking for one. thats my opinion. you sort of just raped your motor, its funny and all because this is hmt and its not out of the ordinary, but seriously...

It was the absolute best solution at the time. I was bullshitting with my cousin last night and apparently did the same thing to a accord he fixed and didnt want to do the bottom end. Fast easy solution. Hondas rawk!!

Bitch is on hit. I was ripping on her last night driving home at 2:00am. It was kinda like driving on the autobahn. 150 miles and counting ;)

Boosted?? ---- no man all the guy did before me was put DC headers on it. I was racing it the night it broke, but it was on the way home. Anyhow, I suspect the guy was not a very good mechanic. He told me they changed the timing belt recently so something there fucked it up.. Not to mention this is the only car I have ever been in that actually rolls forward when its not in gear. Another reason I gangstered this ---- O0

Kinda sounds like a diesel truck the way it chatters on the loose timing belt cover. I just pretend theres a badass motor there. one of these days I will get the camera setup back on my computer so you can see the performance of the light weight crank pully. without the bolt there and just the weld.... I compare it to F1 performance.

I had the crank pully welded on a old d15 i had and it ran strong until one day i was driving down the road and the ------- weld broke on the pully leaving me stranded. After that i pulled the motor apart for fun and the themain bearings where totally fucked but it ran strong lol

Check out the video on how loud she is now. Selling it on ebay O0

The video sucks btw, no ripping, just a reference on it still running and the sound. b20accord can vouch for me when I ripped on her the other day with a donut on one tire. He said it was like a bicycle did a mad ass burnout. Pretty smokey though. I have to give props to the dc headers, lightweight pully and tire. It almost had a heart attack when I tried to do it today with the fixed, full size tire. >:(
