Welding cast steel?

Heres the dilly. I have 60-1 t3/t4 with a standard 5 bolt downpipe flange. I want a v-band flange so I dont have to worry about loose bolts or blown gaskets. I bought a cast stainless 5 bolt flange and a v-band flange. What I want to do is; weld the 5 bolt flange to the housing to block the waste gate port off, then weld the v-band flange to the 5 bolt flange.

Has anyone done this? If so, how did it hold up?

What should I weld it with? I'm a pretty good welder and I have a snap-on 140 amp DC muscle mig that will do mig/tig/smaw.

I'm thinking about tigging it with stainless but i'm not sure exactly what filler to use. Any ideas?

I did a search and sorted through alot of posts tryiing to find some pics but they were all too old and none of the pics showed up. Anyone have any pics of this done? I'd like to see how it turned out.

Thanks

if you can tig get some nickel rods and do it right.

otherwise throw in a roll of fluxcore and up the wire speed vs amperage, and go to town

NI rod is for cast iron, this is cast steel dog O0

my bad, thought you said cast iron 5-bolt.

if its steel to steel, just weld it like normal. you can weld the flapper shut, or disconnect the wastegate actuator and use a plate or an i-bolt and a piece of flatstock to keep it shut in case you want to sell the turbo, and not have it all welded up

Alright, I thought it would be more complicated than that. I stumbled along the sticky about filler rods and CSaddict says to use ER307 filler when mating stainless to cast steel. So....I'll give that a go and see how it works out. I'll post up some pics when I do it.

cast steel is a different animal, i just fluxcore everything. 'if it sticks, then you can weld it'
