Welding Cast Iron to Cast Iron?

I have got a MIG weld using the flux core wires, I just got a Saab turbo outlet pipe, the flange matched the turbo ok but I need rotate the direction where it is pointing. ( I can't rotated the turbo, as I already rotated so the oil return it point straight down). Hence I am thinking cutting the flange from the out pipe then weld it back on pointing the right way. As the topic mentioned then I would need to weld cast iron to cast iron..... what you guys think?

im no welder, but im not to sure that flux core is gonna cut it.

a welding buddy of mine once said that you could braze (spelling) the cast iron, which is slightly different than welding.

You could try flux coring it, but I would heat both pieces of cast up with a torch first, get them good and hot then start welding.

do this or if you don’t have torch just heat it up in the bbq or something. just make sure it hot, then weld a few inches together then but it back in the bbq to get the temp beck up. and repeat.

I welded a chipped off piece the end of the crankshaft on this 90yo pig iron with 0.30" mild steel wire from Lowes using my 110v harbor freight MIG-100 on the highest wire speed, high heat, on a 30' poorly made construction cord, which connects to a 50' extension cord used for wiring the back yard.

It was 1" thick. It took 30 min, but I got very good relative penetration, and it will never break off again. Cast iron is one thing flux core will own the same size mig on, even if the wire diameter on the mig is larger.

People bitch & moan about cast iron alot, but it takes nothing more than PATIENCE.

Thanks guys :) I shall give that a try... but before I do that just noticed the Saab 9000 elbow pipe maybe a soluation without the hassel as it looks like it is rotatable :D if so I can save my efford elsewhere :D

Ravage70 why wouldn't I have this turbo for more then a couple of months? because it is not capable of generating enough power ????? Saying that this turbo I got it is a odd ball one, the closest I have found is the saab, however I have compared it against the 900/9000 models T25 the compressor housing size seems to be resonably larger then the saab equipped ones... so might be ok for boost :D

Re: Welding Cast Iron to Cast Iron?

the people i talk to about welding cast iron to cast iron say that it needs to be done by stick welding. they said youll need to preheat the metal with a torch and get it to glow and then youll need to take a cast iron rod too it. he said there about $2 a rod (pretty expensive) and and he said its not easy. but its the only way to have it done right. if mig it, it will eventually crack and pull apart and stuff. id be carefull.

my two cents hope i can help some :-X

i've welded cast iron together before with 309L filler and a tig with good results, but not sure how it would hold up for your application.

Re: Welding Cast Iron to Cast Iron?

I stick welded my Holset turbine housing aswell as my stock 14b turbine housing I used rod with a high nickel content, cant remember what the # was.
I was told to make sure to try to let it cool as slow as possible so it wont crack, and then to pein it with a chipping hammer to stress relieve it and to remove the slag.
