I only mentioned a generator since you live in an apartment and most landlords frown upon DIY stuff like wiring. I've just started the project of running 220@30amp to my garage. Pain in the ass, it is.

Generators are good for portable fab also. I've done some welding around the place using my 3000 watt genset with fluxcore.
