Turbo Header coating options
 

Let me start by saying I tried to do a search from several pc's in several locations before posting this question. Ok, having said that I am building a custom turbo kit from scratch for my '05 Yamaha R6. I have fabricated a turbo/exhaust manifold using a log style kit and the ends of the stock header. It is coming out very nice, I tac welded it and it is ready to be TIG welded.

Here's the question.... what are my options as far as coating the manifold? I want to protect it and make it look good too. I was going to have it nickel plated, but the bike is all black and I would love to have it coated black as well. What is out there that can withstand the heat?

Here's a pic of the header on the jigg I made. Couple small adjustments and it's off to the welder.

I've heard of people using jethot and it comes in a black.

I was going to suggest JetHot as well. I had the headers on my truck coated and they turned out nice. Also, you can't complain about their warranty either.

If JetHot is out of your budget price wise, you could always try black grill paint or other high temp paint products.

Yeah, Jethot 2000 is good upto 2450 degrees, but they want like $250 for it plus shipping. ----, I made the header for less than $100.

I'm not sure how well grill paint would hold up. Any more ideas are welcome.

What about 2000deg Ceramic Powdercoating? Im having my Turbine Housing and center section done with that.

I realize this and I'm not expecting to coat it for $20. I am just trying to find out what my options are without breaking the bank. Anyone ever use Turbo-X 2000??

Thanks for the replies guys. I got a quote $95 to have it coated with Turbo-X 2000, plus shipping. Says it's good upto 2000 degrees. So far this is my winner.


Evill140 - The site says air dry, do you know how the turbo-x is applied?

It is sprayed on in a couple very thin coats. I am going to be buying some here soon to try on my own manifold. I search Hondanotech and turbomustangs and a few other big diy websites and most people have very good luck with it. About as good luck as with the other big brands. If you search around about it I (I think it was on hondatech) somebody posted temp results next to the manifold before and after and it was pretty substantial. Said you could even hold your hand next to the manifold after a good run.
