Turbo downpipe flange, where to find for td04 9b?
I had bought a 14b/16g flange thinking it would be the same as it looks similar, but turns out the flange is quite a bit smaller. Any ideas on where I can find the correct flange. I've done quite a bit of searching. Turbo is from a 3000gt (one of the pair) for my 1st gen crx 1.5. The only thing I've found is from time to time a precat/O2 housing comes up for grabs on fleabay. Usually they go for about $50. The funny part is that OBX and others make precat delete pipes that use the exact flange I need. Any insiders get me one?

She's standing still at the moment while I search my ass off for this part. The link to the part in post #4 somehow isn't the right flange for the turbo outlet. The shape and bolt pattern is the same as a 14b, but the flange size is about 30% smaller. Here's the option I have on the table, but I'm too cheap to want to spring for this. It's actually a pair which would have to be re-welded anyhow.
That flange is possibly used for turbos with welded wastegates, which mine is not although I guess it could be. I'd rather use a stock wastegate actuator if possible. Mitsubishi 91-93 3000GT GTO VR4 Turbo Pre-Cats Precat: eBay Motors (item 200486319124 end time Jul-01-10 14:27:35 PDT) |

Confirmed that this is the correct 9b flange, the Weirtech link. Cyote, you are awesome!

well if its a galant vr4 turbo i have no clue but if its a 3000gt vr4 turbo then its a 9b and the bastards gonna spool if you even look at the petal lol but i guess thats good :D
what size injectors are you going with?? im thinkig of running the stock 3000gt vr4 360cc injectors but not sure if i want to get some bigger dsm ones or not. and the stock vr4 fuel pump lol . im planning on running the exact some setup as you. d15 with a 9b pushing 6psi (because 6psi is wastegate pressure). but the engine is about to die on me some im thinking a swap or something but ... idl yet lol + i just got a bigger turbo off a truck thats a little bigger then a 14b but im thinking of staying with a single 9b or twin 9b.... im thinking single 9b lol what are your plans?? and specs and stuff?? pretty much im swapping all my leftover parts from my vr4 into my buddies crx lol |
Instant spool is what I'm looking for.
I'm going for cheap and low boost, so 6psi non-intercooled for the moment, probably just using a "tuned" fmu, probably 6:1 and I'm already running an integra ecu and injectors, so the current tune is pretty rich as is. These cars are mechanical advance distributors, so no timing control for the moment other than backing off the timing 4 degrees or so. Stock motors only have 8.5 to 1 compression and are tuned to run on regular 87 octane, so I'll be sure to use premium 91 octane as well. A cheap wideband is in the plans for sure as I'm not fond of changing headgaskets. I'll probably spring for a obd1 conversion and go with Chrome down the line, but I'm looking to get it on the road this summer. |
sounds sweet lol my motor mount just brock and smashed in my can/cam gear ... so im swapping in a d16z6 now then turbocharging that but i might do 2 9b's... not sure

Update. 9b flange came and ITS NOT THE RIGHT PART. I'm almost at a total loss. Anyone know a fool proof way of identifying these mitsubishi turbos? It's only slightly smaller than the 14b on the hotside. The 9b flange is way too small, although the ports seem to line up, just not the mounting points. Here are some pictures.
Both flanges http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x...7302010122.jpg 14b on turbo http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x...7302010123.jpg poor port alignment and bolts don't line up 9b on turbo http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x...7302010124.jpg port alignment works, bolt spacing does not. Any help out there? Cold side casting numbers indicate the turbo is a 3000gt vr4 but the hot side is obviously not a 9b if the flange is correct. cold side number is 49177-01 |
damn that sucks..... if i were u i just snag up some o2 pipes from a vr4 a stock set and not none of that ebay crap if you need some im pretty sure i can give you a email of someone who be willing to sell you some... or just hit up 3sx.org but take some pics of the turbo itself im not sure of any exhaust hosing that mount to a stock 9b.....

How far off are the ports? It's hard to tell in the pic.
Can you grind the turbo to match or grind out the flange. When you weld the tube in, fill the gap in the flange with weld. It doesn't look like it will be a very big gap. |
I'll probably end up using the larger flange as I can modify it to fit. I was just trying to get the right flange for this thing. Never thought it would be this difficult.
The wastegate port is only off a bit, but it will make fabbing a downpipe that much more interesting. Time to get grinding and welding. |
o yeah thats not a 9b exhaust housing..... off a vr4 anyways because this is a 9b off a vr4.... (not the shiny one thats a 16g its the rusty used one)

I believe I have finally figured out what the hell this turbo is. It appears to be an 11b. More info to come as I get it. It will probably be impossible to find a manufactured flange that would be a direct fit, but who knows.
found a bit more info. Turbo is from 1988 mitsubishi colt turbo. Should be an excellent match for a low boost street turbo for the EW motor. |

I wish that would work. I've already got a similar flange to that, but it's too big. I've resigned my self to fabricating one. A little more work, but then it will really be a HMT!
