This project has entered HMT status. The first cut was the hardest because after that there is no turning back. KZ550 engine on yz125 frame.....

A little bit of trimming and the tank and ex-radiator shrouds will fit.....going to keep it looking some what like a dirt bike.

wheres the turbo

nelson8708 06-26-2009 06:05 AM

Its under "fabrication" for a reason.....J/K......Maybe next year but, for now i just want a bike since it seems like all by buddies are riding now.

2BarRacing 06-26-2009 08:05 AM

wow going to be like one of those hill climb monsters where they put 1100 ninja motors on 250 frames

marty095 06-27-2009 12:28 PM

might not be a turbo, but it'll still be sweet when its done...

signorelli21 06-27-2009 07:38 PM

I like the fact its a Yamaha hate the fact it has a Kawasaki engine.

I bet its fast though :D

Slightly biased R6 owner here sir.

nelson8708 06-29-2009 05:54 AM

I got it mounted in the bike but, i need to remove it to do some final welding on the areas i couldn't get to. I also ground down my thumb in the bench grinder accident. So now i have blood, sweat, and i'm sure tears will follow some time during the build. Probably when i get my credit card bill for this past month will all the part purchases i made. I'll get some pics of the bike later today.

I still have a couple more braces i want to make before i put the engine back in for the last time. Its sucks getting it in and out but, now i need to make new gas tank mounts since the stock one wouldn't allow me to remove the engine....Its getting there

marty095 06-29-2009 11:50 PM

are you planning on making this thing street legal?

nelson8708 06-30-2009 05:52 AM

yup..

Sroufe7 06-30-2009 08:05 PM

That'll be pretty cool when you're done.

^trimmed the gas tank to clear the carbs.

So now has come the point where i have a few questions. First is i plan on gutting the stock air box and putting the battery in there along with the rectifier and igniter. I was wondering if the igniter and rectifier need to have air flow over them or if they are inside the battery box (gutted yz airbox) will they be ok? Also, now that i have trimmed the gas tank to clear the carbs i need to figure a way to seal up the huge hole in the bottom of the tank. I went and bought a plastic welder from harbor freight and i dont know if its the welder or just maybe i cant weld plastic but, it didn't work very well. Is there anywhere i can send the tank to get it finished?

2BarRacing 07-02-2009 04:13 AM

i would try going to a chrome plating place i used to work at one and the chrome tanks are made of plastic and we had to weld new bottoms on them all the time maybe one of the guys there could do it side work style

marty095 07-02-2009 10:19 AM

rectifier is covered on my cbr, I would think you'd want some airflow to it to keep it cool. I wouldn't put it too close to any plastic though, those suckers get hot.

lookin good, you're making quick progress.

nelson8708 07-18-2009 03:18 AM

Well i'm now wiring the bike and have a few questions. Just to make sure i have everything correct before i put power to it i would like a for a few others to check to make sure i have the correct wires going to ground and power.

http://i30.tinypic.com/e8wcb9.jpg

Ignitor :
D/G - coil ground
B - coil ground
R/Y - 12v source
Y/B - Ground

Rectifier :
R/W - 12v source ( back to the B+ termial since i think this is the charging wire)
B - Ground
Br - 12v source

Correct or not?

Getting closer and closer to seeing if the engine runs

nelson8708 07-20-2009 05:09 AM

Here are a couple updated pics. I have finished the battery box / cage, mounted the rectifier and ignitor where they will have plenty of air flow, mounted the coils, and the rectifier is now wired along with my starter circuit. Once the ignitor is wired i will be able to attempt to start her. Over this next week i want to make my new rear brake pedal and extend the stock kz kick stand.

looking super nice, you're making me wish i hadn't sold my suzuki triple.

nelson8708 07-29-2009 07:40 PM

i finished the wiring, brake pedal, and kick stand. I started on the exhaust and the way i had planed to route the center two cylinders to help give the wheel clearance is not going to work so the good news is the exhaust is done......the bad news is now i need to rake out the front end a few degrees to give me some room. Hope to have that done by the 8th......this is going to test my welding skillz :)

toyollAZ86 07-30-2009 12:15 AM

love the band aid

nelson8708 08-03-2009 09:34 PM

I added 3-4 degrees of rake and moved the head tube forward about 1.25". This up coming weekend i am taking a trip to "tail of the dragon" with some buddies. I'm going to borrow my uncle's honda sabre 700 for the weekend. Depending on when i get back sunday i may try to rebuild my forks. I found a 41 tooth rear sprocket so i will be able to get close to the stock sprocket ratio of the kz. I know i have said that i will try to start it but, i want to wait so when it does start i can ride it down the street at least. So i need to get part of the head welded so i can drill and tap a new hole for the exhaust stud that got broke off. Here are a few pics i snapped during this past weekend.

Have you looked into what you have to do to register it for the street?

nelson8708 08-04-2009 03:47 PM

As far as registration goes all i need to do is take the kz title down to the bmv and get some plates for it. To make the bike legal i need: head light, tail light, turn signals, street tires, and put the plate on it.....not much at all

:)

nelson8708 08-12-2009 09:40 PM

Here are a few pics from my trip to "tail of the dragon" i took over the weekend. I rode a 1985 Honda Sabre 700........i couldn't keep up with my buddies that were all on 06' and new crouch rockets. Even so, i still had a great time riding. Any one who rides needs to make it there at least once. Stay humble though and leave your ego at the base of the mountain......some guy was killed Saturday on the mountain.

^tree of shame....bike parts from wrecks

P.S.
I plan on rebuilding the forks this weekend on the SM project.

donnyboy 08-13-2009 12:34 PM

When I was stationed at Fort Knox, KY, me and some buddies made a few trips to the drangon. I hate to admit it but I have parts in that tree as do a few others I know. Good ride though. Wouldmake a real nice year end ride here from Wisconsin but I cant talk anyone else into going.

nelson8708 08-13-2009 03:33 PM

sucks that you went down but, kinda cool that you get to leave your mark. I'm turning that trip into a twice a year thing now. Probably wont go again this season but, next season i'll be there in the summer and once again in the fall. Seeing the leaves turn colors in the mountains would be an awsome view.

40 psi 4g63 08-18-2009 12:51 AM

needs a turbo

yokhomano 08-24-2009 09:32 PM

the tree is sure scary

nelson8708 08-30-2009 05:48 AM

I rebuilt the front forks last weekend.....right now i'm waiting on some parts. Also picked up some alum wire for my mig to see if i can fix a few things my self instead of paying to have it done. Now that all the big stuff is out of the way i'm having trouble getting motivated to go into the garage to finish it.....

Things left to do:

Throttle cable bracket
Install front and rear sprockets (when they get here)
Run clutch cable
Repair where an exhaust stud was broken when the bike was dropped
Finish gas tank.....

Not a whole lot left but, i dont seem to have the drive right now since school started and i picked up an xbox 360 so i'll be ready when forza 3 comes out :)

nelson8708 09-02-2009 10:17 PM

I went to the GP last weekend, it was pretty cool. For me it doesn't come close to Formula 1 when they were here (hope they come back) but, its better than the Indy 500. For me ovals are just to plain for me.....i'm all the about the road / street courses and hearing the cars bang through the gears and have braking contest into the corner........the thought gets my blood pumping just thinking about it

Getting closer and closer.....I need to repair where the exhaust stud threads into since it was damaged when the bike was dropped but, other than that its ready to be started.

To do list to ride:

Fix exhaust stud
Get pod filters
Jet kit
Sync carbs
Send gas tank to get finished

To do list for the street:

Head light
Tail light
Turn signals
Street tires
Insure
Plate

Put tensioner on that. I did thesame conversion a few years ago. That was the only issue I had. Looks Good Cheers

YZ125 with street bike engine start up - Car Videos on StreetFire

Needs jets and the carbs need to be sync'ed.... #2 cylinder is not firing, i think the pilot might have gotten clogged again.

nelson8708 10-28-2009 08:54 PM

With the bigger jets and sync'ing the carbs she runs nice...still need to work on my pilot screw setting. Just picked up forza 3 so probably wont be getting much done on either project for a week or so

my gamer tag is nelson8708 if you guy want to get your ass handed to you :)
