I've tapped oil pan on the car never had a problem and pretty much all the miata guys do it that way. Use a lot of grease on the bits, flush the oil with some cheap walmart stuff a couple times.

Re: stripped oil pan

go to SEARS and buy the craftsman strip out kit.... it is awesome just make sure you have a socket that can hold the strip out bung...

If its just the nut head thats stripped you can get a special socket for removing stripped nuts/bolts. Its slightly undersized with sharp little edges that dig into the metal. Works every time for me.

You can tap a pan without taking it off, Ive done it myself, heard o it being done and I'll probably do it again!

If you do it that way, simply put some grease on the bit and tap so the metal chips stick to it

You wont get all of them, but thats when you go to walamrt and get the CHEAP oil, flush it out

Magnetic drain plug will catch the rest

I work at a dealer....we tap oil pans all the time without taking them off. Stupid jiffy lubes an shyt always strip pans....I use a spark plug thread tap that matches the heliocoil kit diameters that we get from local autopart shops.

Use my ratcheting wrench and back out after the tap goes about half way in to bring out the shavings.....Never have had a problem with it or any of the other guys here......if u must...just use some wd-40 while tapping the pan..just spray some on ever now an then..will help keep the threads from over heating an warping

Re: stripped oil pan

Use a oversized plug. Worked for me no problem. Just dont overtighten this one.
