SMILEY aka Mitec 120 TIG results
Hi guys, here are some beads I ran last night with my Smiley TIG. Some passes were with filler some without. I realized, that with using a 3/32 tungsten, the 1/16 filler wasnt cutting it, I need 3/32 filler.
Settings on Smiley were maxed out at 120 amps. Base metal was 1/4" steel flat bar I had laying around. I had some graying around the outside of the beads, so I turned my argon up to 30cfm ( which I think is really high for welding in a garage) and kinda solved the problem. I think it was needing a flapper disk to clean up the surface. But please advice me on my technique and what else I can do. I apologize for the pics, camera phone http://hobartwelders.com/mboard/atta...9&d=1160057164 http://hobartwelders.com/mboard/atta...0&d=1160057179 http://hobartwelders.com/mboard/atta...1&d=1160057243 |

Try actually welding 2 peices of metal together. That would give use a better idea of what your doing.

Re: SMILEY aka Mitec 120 TIG results
looks good from those shitty pictures :P why do you need 3/32 filler? that ---- is thick as hell. 1/16 should suffice.

Re: SMILEY aka Mitec 120 TIG results
I've used 3/32 filler on MS, it was nice depending on what I was weldigon, the burn is a lot more controlled as you don't dab your filler as much, but I got those filler rods for free and wanted to try them, I only use 1/16 or .035 on REALLY thin ---- all the time now.

Re: SMILEY aka Mitec 120 TIG results
I use 1/16" for just about everything.

Re: SMILEY aka Mitec 120 TIG results
Ya, but answer me this. When ever are you going to need to weld a bead straight across a peice of flat bar?

Re: SMILEY aka Mitec 120 TIG results

|
Re: SMILEY aka Mitec 120 TIG results

Re: SMILEY aka Mitec 120 TIG results
Too much heat, improper prep. I never run over 18-20cfm, unless I have the tungsten pulled way out for tight spots.
|
Re: SMILEY aka Mitec 120 TIG results
I too use almost 1/16 for everything. Although i did buy both just because lol i wanted to see the difference between the two. I also use the 3/32 2% but for some reason i seem to be able to control the puddle better with a 1/16 tungsten ???. and its not a smiley tig.

Re: SMILEY aka Mitec 120 TIG results
To my surprise, my local welding supply store had gas lense setups in stock. I took my smiley tig torch with me so we could match up the right kit, and make sure (in the store) that it fit.
I purchased two gas lense kits, they were for both 1/16 and 3/32 tungsten sizes. They do fit the smiley tig. Information http://tectorch.com/detail/gas%20lens%20kits.htm |
Re: SMILEY aka Mitec 120 TIG results
Almost all #17 air cooled torch parts fit the smiley.

Re: SMILEY aka Mitec 120 TIG results
Just posted it for those that didnt know that. ;)
Took me a while to understand some things, I thought it would be helpful. |
Re: SMILEY aka Mitec 120 TIG results
Carbon steel won't be shiny like stainless will after welding.
|
Re: SMILEY aka Mitec 120 TIG results
i cant even get stainless to be shiny lol. Unless i get really really close to the puddle. :'(

Re: SMILEY aka Mitec 120 TIG results
yep.. but i think thought those welders are from CHina..work good..
|
Re: SMILEY aka Mitec 120 TIG results
Smiley Tools buys said welders from some guy in China(probably Mitec). They ship them to him. He ships them to you.
|
Re: SMILEY aka Mitec 120 TIG results
Wow you are smart.
|
Re: SMILEY aka Mitec 120 TIG results
Its not my fault there are people thinking the welder was drop shipped from the home of SSAC products.

Re: SMILEY aka Mitec 120 TIG results
i need someone professional to come in and tell me what i'm doing wrong. my welds are always dark and nasty looking.... regardless of the amount of gas used.
|
Re: SMILEY aka Mitec 120 TIG results
2 Attachment(s)
use more filler, i know it sounds stupid but the more filler i use in the weld, the nicer the welds come out. bead wise and color wise.
make sure you properly wire brush, rinse in acetone, and make sure the tungsten is sharp here some pics, of my recent smiley weld Attachment 31997 Attachment 31998 |
Re: SMILEY aka Mitec 120 TIG results
I just bought one of these silly things too cant wait :6
|
Re: SMILEY aka Mitec 120 TIG results
another issue i'm having (with filler) is the filler ends up "sticking out" on the other side of the weld more so then on the welding side. (and if i use less heat, then the weld is too small)
