Sand Rail/ Dune Buggy

I moved down to San Luis Obispo cali a week ago and I just made it out to the beach. There were a bunch of dune buggies out there and it got me thinking about how hard they are to make.

Fabrication - what would you suggest as a general frame setup?

Engine -

I've seen vw, subaru, and even an ls1..
What about even a d16 turbo? they're cheap and easy. Toss it in the back of the car and lock the diff?

where do you find piping for the chassis?

whhat kind of suspension do these things run? Brakes?

I'm a dune buggy n00b so a link or anything would be helpful. Thanks

i had one, just a small single seater i built off a honda odyssey dune buggy frame, i had a 340 twin snowmobile engine in it with dual custom expansion chambers, the thing was wickid fast and fun as hell, It had a snowmobile CVT transmission hooked to a chaincase straight down to a solid rear axle... it drove like a snowmobile in response and such

as for metal look in the phone book for metal suppliers... I sold my buggy for 800 bones a while back after I blew the engine doing burnouts on pavement... i gave the buddy a 250cc suzuki 4 stroke ATV motor to go with the chassis, allthough I doubt the idiot ever got the thing together

Dune buggy's are cool when they are rear engine or you have tons of power. I have my self a rock buggy. I like wheeling in the woods and rocks and can still go out to the dunes when i want. If your going to build a buggy there are lots of chassis builders out there that can build you some thing basic for pretty cheap.

VW Power is cheap and easy to setup but a D16 with a HMT kit would own.I have had friends with VW powered buggys and even 100hp is alot of fun in a buggy.I was thinking a 13B with a VW bus transaxle or a Honda D15/6 setup would be the way to go for keeping the weight down and easy/cheap power.

only problem with a D series, is finding out how to shift the damn thing since the motor will sit behind you.

do a rear H setup with the cable shifter O0

Sand rails and dune buggies are kick ass! My buddy has a VW powered, heavy chassis, stock style suspension in AZ. With the right crazy driver you can go anywhere with that thing. I got pulled over on cayon lake road at 85 mph sideways, it was my version of pikes pike. The cop let me go, but followed me the whole way up and back. This was back a few years, so there wasn't as much traffic or cops.
