Rear Bumper Done (pics at bottom + bonus)
So I posted the other day my front bumper I built, and now I am working on the rear.
I don't really know where I am going with this just yet, but the plan is to keep it light and light duty, but still look good. It will have a hitch in the middle for a d-ring hook. I don't plan on doing much but tugging my stuck Jeep outta spots I get trapped in once in a while, which doesn't happen often, but you know how that goes. This is the mount plate. It started as a 7" long strip of 3/16" HRPO and then cut down and bent to go into the frame. Then there are holes in the tab that goes into the frame, backed with threaded nuts, so it bolts from the bottom too. http://gitout.com/v-web/gallery/d/15537-1/rear2.jpg So far I've bent and mounted a main hoop, here is a shot of what it looks like so far. I'm still deciding on what I wanna do past this. Ive got it up as high as I can without interfering with the hatch. http://gitout.com/v-web/gallery/d/15539-1/rear3.jpg The tube hugs the body really well, 3/16" to maybe 1/4" gap. This makes me nervous for wheeling so im brainstorming a way to side to side strut the bumper so theres some resistance to bending it into the body. http://gitout.com/v-web/gallery/d/15541-1/rear4.jpg That's all so far, I will update as progress is made. Re: Building Rear Bumper Progress Pics
More progress, its starting to look like a bumper now! After I weld this up, it goes back on the Jeep so I can build a good strong tie-in to make the hitch nice n stout.

Are you planning on towing anything heavy with that? :l At first when I looked at the pics I thought it looked pretty gay, but the update changed my mind. It looks badass. :y

Re: Part III Update - Jeep Rear Bumper Build
yeah, rear leafs.
the longarms work great, it rides alot better and i max out my shocks in suspension travel, so thats the next upgrade, after i focus on new rear leafs and fixing my shackle angles so the rear will travel better... for springs ive got rough country 4.5" coils, they aren't bad...they haven't sagged yet and they are a decent compromise of soft and stiff. I am planning on adding JKS Adjustable spacers to give me a minimum of another 1.25" lift and adjsutability if it ever falls out of level. Someday when I have alot of cash to blow and a second car I'll do a triangulated 4-link rear and ditch the leafs, but probably no time soon. |
Re: Part III Update - Jeep Rear Bumper Build
Those adjustable spacers are stupid expensive. I wouldn't spend the money on them. :l Do you disconnect your sways when you off-road?

Re: Part III Update - Jeep Rear Bumper Build
You can get an electronic sway bar disconnect for not much
|
Re: Part III Update - Jeep Rear Bumper Build
I like it. Are you going to cap the ends and powder coat the entire thing?
|
Re: Part III Update - Jeep Rear Bumper Build
just take it and get it line-x'd. The spray on bedliner shyt works great on bumpers/brush guards etc

The leaf springs are shot, a near vertical shackle angle and an add-a-leaf will do that. New springs are next on the list. |

Nice Bumper work. I'm opting to keep the stocker because I like the looks.
I know they are not strong. I already bent the front brush bar and bumper mounts, so I fabbed 5/8" bumper bracket with a 5/8" 45,000lb d-ring for tugging. As for the rear, I'm reinforcing the trailer hitch end plates, dropping them lower and putting the same d-ring out back. |

Last weekend I was in a tight trail and rubbed a tree in the back, the bumper didn't budge, just a little scuff from the tree. Had a stock bumper been there, I'd have a dent and be replacing a taillight. I'm already lovin it. |
Re: Rear Bumper Done (pics at bottom + bonus)
Ya, Haven't done much wheeling yet, just small spots on my parent's 6acres. Too much snow, got stuch too many times up to the frame to bother trying in the bush.
We're getting a thaw this week so I hope to head out so we'll see if my opinions will change. |
Re: Rear Bumper Done (pics at bottom + bonus)
I can't remember the name of them, but are you going ot make any of those bars that go under the body between the wheels? They're like those stupid steps they put on parking lot SUVs but actually functional.
edit- rocker guards! |
Re: Rear Bumper Done (pics at bottom + bonus)
yeah ill be building sliders soon, they're a few items down my list of projects.
