protege turbo
 

I am new to turbo's and was curious how hard it would be to build my own. I usually do my own body work, and wrenching to the car. I was kinda curious if someone would know how much this sort of thing runs a person. I probably couldn't do any of the cutting or welding so that kinda puts me in a bind, but I suppose most of that could be done for me at my local exhaust shop. Also wondering if anyone has any good resources to locate the parts needed for this project.

First off, wrong forum, there's a "Forced Induction" forum for questions like this. That aside, if you search you will find the answers alot faster than waiting for replies.

Anyways, if you dont have the confidence to throw together your own kit, im sure there is a turbo kit on ebay. If you are a begginner you wont want too much boost to play with when you first start so an ebay kit is good to dip your toes in with. Also, was the engine in your car used in any other cars, especially ones with a turbo option? If so, find one of those that has been wrecked and play vulture with it.

If you are new to turbos, go to Barnes&Noble and pick up the book "Maximum Boost" by corkey bell. That book is actually a really good read (not boring) and will give you everything you need to know so that when people give you advice on boards like this you wont look completely clueless :)

thanks a lot :) I am sorry I posted in the wrong section. Yeah I don't have a ton of knowledge with turbo's, but I am fairly knowledgeable when it comes to my car, I was hoping the whole dealO would cost less than 1000~1500$, but who knows right?

It all depends how resourceful you are; there are a ton of roads you can go down, each with their own positives and negatives. and in the words of someone from the BMW board I lurk on, "why buy it when you can spend twice as much doing it yourself?"

lol that may be very true... i am creeping on ebay atm and finding a lot of cheap turbo kits.... but who knows what will be a good fit for my protege.... i don't wanna blow close to 1000$ for something isn't going to fit right!?!?!

Thats the risk you take, somone on bimmerforums.com bought an Ebay manifold and it must have been that poor childs first day in the welding part of the sweatshop because the flange was welded on upsidedown

lol zomg thats what I am talking about! I really hope this does not happen to me.... yikes!

sorry to ask one more question, but turbo charging definitely needs a fuel management computer and the ones I was looking at were anywhere from 500~1200$ imo that is crazy.... this is more than the turbo would likely cost if I got it off ebay and did most of the installing myself :(
