prepping for oxy acetylene welding

is there a good product out there that you can put on your metal to prevent corrosion and oxidation.
my welds are looking like crap cause i of so much contamination on the metal after i weld.

i end up having to grind oxidation off the metal to weld the other end of the pipe cleanly.

i keep it old school with O/A

Re: prepping for oxy acetylene welding

ive never had much luck with oxy or brazing. i figure the oxygen is the contamination, catch-22 to use it for welding. I may be wrong though. its a lost art for sure

Re: prepping for oxy acetylene welding

solar flux maybe?

toyollAZ86 09-10-2008 11:19 AM

Re: prepping for oxy acetylene welding

i was thinking the same thing that the oxy was the cause of the contamination.
the solar flux is like a powder you put on before right.

Re: prepping for oxy acetylene welding

solar flux you mix with alcohol and it glazes over like a silicon glass. its not, but that's the best way i can describe it.
ive done little oxy-fuel welding but what i have done there sin't tons you can do. you an't purge the atmosphere away from the hot metal so youre fairly well screwed.

Re: prepping for oxy acetylene welding

yeah. that sucks.

i wanna try some OxyAcetylene welding on some SS. just to see if it will work.

anyone tried that.

ill post pics of how it goes.

Re: prepping for oxy acetylene welding

It works fine, just have to have the right flux, and correct rod. Same with aluminum, steel, ect... Stay away from magnesium you can weld it, but it is more likely that you will start it on fire.

toyollAZ86 09-29-2008 04:37 PM

Re: prepping for oxy acetylene welding

we'll see on the flux part. i dont have any. so it'll be raw. but i do have 308 SS rod going on 304 metal. gonna try it today.

i was thinking the same about aluminum. i wanna try that too. just to see.

i would think SS would weld even better with OA because it doesnt have to corrosive properties that other metals have right.

Re: prepping for oxy acetylene welding

I took a 6 month welding class at college and oxyfuel welding was the first thing I had to do and it was the single most frustrating thing i've ever done. I whipped through the stick/mig ----, and I even thought steel and aluminum TIG was easier than oxy welding. I was constantly welding ---- to the table an accident and i would have to air chisel the ---- off

Re: prepping for oxy acetylene welding

There is a reason that it is taught first. It is slow, and it allows you to learn heat control and to see the puddle and manipulate the puddle. The reason all of the other things were so easy after, was because of what you learned there.

Re: prepping for oxy acetylene welding

most places wont even touch oxy/fuel welding. they just do some cutting classes.

ok here it is.

the SS welding really didnt work. it was like way too much heat. i didnt try turning the flame down.
the way it was going it didnt seem like the metal was liking it.

some pics of good welds

some good welds and some bad. the bad ones were before i realised that clean metal=clean welds.

not bad, not bad, good to see lost techniques still alive in the world

Re: prepping for oxy acetylene welding

The SS needed to be cleaned and prepped with it like that you would have had a hell of a time even with a good tig welder.

Re: prepping for oxy acetylene welding

Prep it alittle better I just dont like seeing the scale in the heat zone.
Its not overheated, not so hot its warped to hell. You know, get the filler application down and you got it.

Still waiting on you to watse money & buy a tig LoL!

Re: prepping for oxy acetylene welding

seriously. i want a tig so bad.. its just so freakin expensive and or big.

Try and find a china-tig vender that'll service CSaddict's on the cheap?

ok so bringing back the dead.

remember that pic up top that i posted of me trying to weld stainless with gas.

well i found a flux that allows you to gas weld SS.

this is a pic of the exact same piece of SS tubing that i tried out for the first time ever.
flows like butter.

great job. man.

toyollAZ86 06-09-2009 09:36 AM

thanks man. technically its the second time ive welded SS. the first being the pic up top and then the second being this most recent pic.
i think ill start an SS project now.

theres no PORN in the fab section smart guy.

snowdrift 06-09-2009 08:54 PM

hey toyolla. i was thinking i'm gonna buy one of the ss roll bars off of ebay for my miata.
if you want something to practice on, i'll let you practice on it, by making a little more support for the thing.?
whatdya say? i'll give you a few bucks obviously, but even though i don't mind using the ebay bars, i don't trust em so much as others, and would like to get it supported a little anyway.
pretty much take this.
http://racinghouse.onlinera.com/Acce.../RBR-MIA90.jpg
and fab on some support to make it more like this
http://www.dnamotoring.com/dnamotori...llc/RC-MX5.jpg
however that would work.. i'll explain it a little better some other time.
not really expecting you to do all crazy like they have there. i can't really explain it over a keyboard, and would have to show you in person. but it would just invole 3 more bars, and some flanges on the bottom to bolt it in.
anyway. i'll have to talk to you about that in person.. or i'll try and draw up what i mean and post it or something.
