Pre-runner bumper for my blazer

9 Attachment(s)
This is a PreRunner style front bumper for my 99' BlaZeR2 (blazer zr2)

Used 1/4" thick 2" wide piping (1.5" inside diameter), angle iron, and a bit of flat iron~ and LOTS of 4" cutoff wheels.

The frame will bend before this bumper bends 8)

Yea, it's welded straight to the frame, but it doesn't hinder or get in the way of anything. Front approach angle is still just as high.

I used a Mig welder, and a 12 ton hydraulic jack pipe bender (ebay $100)

$50 in supplies and 10hrs of man labor later~~~ presto!

Still needs to be painted~ (will do on sat night) an then i'll get some daytime shots of it~ 8)

That's comming next summer... Until then, i deal with my quick disconnect sway bar mod. (wing nuts on the sway bar end links)

This spring is the 5.7 Vortec swap.

The 4.3 v6 @ 260ft/lbs isn't enough... I like 355ft/lbs @3600rpm >:D

Like i said... Comin in the summer ;) I'm prob gunna go w/ a Rubicon front axle w/ some air lockers front and back.

Someone else asked how thick the frame was... I dont know the thickness of the top of my head, but the frame will bend before the prerunner bar will. I think it's 3/16's Box frame. You can see it in the 4th picture from the top in my first post. I used 1.5" inside diameter steel plumbing pipe from Home Depot. It's 1/4" sidewall, so 2" outside diameter. The ---- is HEAVY, but damn strong. :y Winch comin in the future, after the 5.7, and after the SFA swap.

what i have on it NOW is a pre-runner bar. :y

It goes along the lines of the desert pre runners such as this :

Hence... not a brush guard ;)

Looks good. That's what I'm looking to build for my XJ when I pick it up in a few weeks.

Ya, no fogs, just a nice heavy Warn 8000 winch or so.

Re: Pre-runner bumper for my blazer

what does a brush guard or prerunner bar do besides look neat and weigh a lot? I can see it giving a good place to mount a winch, but that's about it.. and lightbars don't ahve to be made stronger than the frame of the vehicle.

bumblezc 12-20-2006 06:13 PM

Re: Pre-runner bumper for my blazer

Mounting a winch, Towing the vehicle out of a bind, Tieing skid plates into and much much more. If the were for only looks, do you think every hardcore or REAL 4x4 would have them?

jackfrost1031 12-20-2006 10:19 PM

Re: Pre-runner bumper for my blazer

do you realize how many NON-REAL 4x4s have them?

I've not seen that many on the trucks people offroad in around here, of which there are quite a few. There are lots of hybrids and all that that people have, but i guess when you're at that point you build in mounts for a skidplate somewhere else..
