Oil Pump Design for my Turbo Banshee
 

I finally finished designing the oil pump for my Banshee. I was originally going to use an oil pump off a 300ex but I would have had to rig it like a negro and it wouldn't have been reliable. So I figured the best way to do it was design a pump from scratch. It was a pain in the ass and took a long time but I think in the end it will be worth it since I'll have a reliable oiling system.

Here's the original 300ex oil pump that I was going to use. I took alot of dimensions from this pump and I'm also still using the two internal gears from it:

On the left is the gasket set. The center is the oil bath and lid. And to the right is the actual oil pump that will actually pump the oil.

Finally what the whole thing looks like assembled:

The two big holes are where the in from the reservoir and out for the turbo. The actual lines thread into the oil tank lid.

The whole assembly fits underneath the waterpump and runs off a custom shaft:

The shaft runs where the breather hose is comming out of. You can see the 2 screw holes that the whole pump assembly attaches to. The pump takes up most of the free space. With this setup the oil pump will always be encased in oil and everything will be in one neat reliable package. The whole thing is going to be machined from 6061 Aluminum. The pump pieces will be cut on a HAAS 3 axis Vertical mill and the gasket set will be cut on a 3 axis waterjet. Now the only thing is to find the time to actually machine the damn thing. :3


Any suggestions or comments are welcome, I never designed a ------- oil pump before so lets hear some opinions. :8

catia owns all cad! it is so nice to work with compared to other software like solidworks or unigraphics.

it looks like you are going to need some edm work for some of the small internal sharp corners (on the lower oil journal?), unless you can get away with finishing them with a 1mm cutter or something.

good work, but wouldn't an electric pump on a toggle switch be more hmt stye :P

I love CATIA. The stress analysis, virtual tool path simulation and all that other good ---- makes it a pretty powerful tool. I'm actually designing my new frame with it also. As for the small cavities I'm just going to use a small cutter. The whole this was designed to be cut with a 1/2 inch flat end mill, besides the oil paths.


Not when you already have a maxed out electrical system trying to power a fuel pump, ECU, injectors, MAF and all the other good ---- that was never meant to be run on a 60 Watt AC stator. ;)

Well my job title is engineer so that should answer your question. ;) I've only used Autocad before, catia is a completely different program. (easier to use :8 )
