newb welding question!

quick question dose aluminized piping weld the same as mild steel piping. does the aluminized piping need a ac welder or will my smiley be enough.

aluminized - http://store.racing-solutions.org/exbukit1.html

mild steel - http://store.racing-solutions.org/inbukit1.html

one is for exhast and the other is for intercooler,

I just use a wirebrush on the aluminized stuff. You technically should clean and wirebrush both surfaces, but it's not 100% necessary.

The weld is going to rust anyways.

I have welded aluminized pipe before, it seems to work ok. Didn't seem any different from welding regular mild steel. The only problem was the fumes from whatever the pipe is coated in.

that shouldnt be the case, popping is from lack of gas protection. Impurities in the weld. Definately clean the areas your trying to weld. Other then that there shouldnt be any issue, where you clean the aluminized it will not rust, the whole material is treated, its not just sprayed on. However the area that is welded will rust even if your using stainless rod.
good luck

The aluminized coating can pop pretty badly at times when you tig weld it, and even with mig sometimes.

Try getting a cadmium plated bolt and welding it...that ---- sucks to weld on.

My advice is to GRIND off the aluminized coating from the pipe you're welding..unless you're gonna mig it and don't really care if it looks that good.

Everytime. I always take a wire wheel on my grinder and just get rid or an inch or two around the pipe. Sometimes I forget to brush it off, and I will go to tig it and it starts popping bad.
