new tig, need tips

just bought this tig

http://cgi.ebay.com/160-AMP-ARC-DC-T...QQcmdZViewItem

i like it, but i am having trouble getting nice deep penetrating welds my welds come out being more convex than anything. i don't know if its the cheap ass pepboys exhaust pieces i've been welding on or what. i'll take pics so you can better see what im talkin about. i've master mig but im having trouble with tig........although i've only been trying for about one hour....the welds hold up but they don't look too good i've been using mild steel filler and 3/32 electrode.

i need tips like what size electrode to use, and what are the best filler metals for making manifolds.

I imagine Scratch/Lift/Touch Start.

3/32 2% Tungstens. The rest depends on what your welding.

What Amps? Flow Rate, Torch Angles and Distances play alot in TIGging without amprage control.

Re: new tig, need tips

ADOPT TOUCH ARC-LEADING TECHNIQUE, REMOVE HIGH- FREQUENCY ELECTRIC CIRCUIT, TO AVOID THE INTERFERENCE.

Just read this. Not to sure how to interpret it, but it may be HF Start

Re: new tig, need tips

2% ther. 20chf, i think i've been holding the torch 3/4 high and at a 45 degree angle and the filler rod at 15 degrees. amperage? im not sure it doesn't say it exactly it only says 1-10 i had it on 3-4 and still blow holes through ---- every now and then. i practiced on my friends broken tool cart that i fixed for him.

p.s its a scratch start and it ------ sucks i get it stuck on the base metal while trying to start an arc.

also i can only see the ball on the flowmeter go up when i start my arc so its hard to adjust it because i'd have to do so while welding

seriously this is why you should have saved and bought something with a little more detail, quality and control, now you will go spend XXX.xx more dollars to try to undo what you just bought.

trust me ive been down that road homey

yea i wasn't aware what the hell it meant because of the way they worded it on ebay, i thought they meant it was high frequency. but i'll just buy another one maybe a miller or lincoln this time
