For the helmet it's all about how much you have to spend.

If you're putting two much heat in then turn it down and try again, or move faster.

Tell us more about your set up. Are you using stainless wire? What gas? What machine? are you cleaning your material?

Try ebay seller, usaweld. They are the distributor for HTP. Im not an expert on welding by any means, but Ive had no issue with the helmet at all and love it. Its fully adjustable (darkening, delay and some others I can think of). The company is EXTREMELY well organized and professional. They have a full range of products and accessories and are made in the us. If your unsure, just call them. They are a great help. I paid 70$ for my helmet.

Seriously, the vision loss you can experience from welding without a good helmet far outweighs whatever temporary joy you get from sticking something together yourself. It's honestly worth the wait for your eyes.
