miging stainless

i plan to mig some stainless together this weekend for an exhaust need to know if anyone here has sucessfully done it with a mig using 75/25 argon/co2. any pics etc. i heard to use helium but i only have a single bottle and dont want to get helium if i can get by without.

c25 is for mild, use either trimix or straight argon

Re: miging stainless

Trimix aka"gold gas" is rad as hell. You can run a real nice weld on stainless with the right gas and wire. good luck man

Re: miging stainless

oh yeah tri mix is alot easier to weld with than straight argon... but you can use either..

Re: miging stainless

DO NOT use 100% helium. The arc will wander so badly that you won't be able to get a good weld made.

anybody want to explain exactly what trimix is?

If I go down to my local Airgas will they know what it is?

Yes.

how thick of a piece of stainless steel can a 110v mig welder (lincoln sp135plus) mig with "trimix"...? dont mean to thread jack, i'm interested in the same thing. can it do exhaust/IC pipes?

Re: miging stainless

tri mix is mostly helium with a little argon and a trace of co2

the more co2 you add the more corrosion resistance you loose with stainless. the SS exhaust welds i did on my car using c25 have evidence of rust even though its SS tubing and SS filler

Re: miging stainless

just use argon, it'll be fine... also make sure you use the proper wire!

Re: miging stainless

if i use stright aragon will i be able to mig mild steel sucessfully with a change of wire? im looking for the best all around combo of gas if that exists. i would like to weld stainless, mild, and possibly aluminum but i read that aluminum doesnt mig too well.

Re: miging stainless

if you want to mig aluminum get a spool gun. don't even try feeding it through the line like steel wire. It will just bind up.

SS wire, what thickness wire should ya get for the exhaust... i know their is different sizes and don't know what is best.

I wanna know this too. I'm going to be doing a lot of welding this summer and some of it is SS, everything else is MS.

I forget the 100% answer, as it's been a while since I did much mig. I'm about 90% sure you can. I prefer 92%argon/2%oxygen, as it adds a lot more heat...but I don't think that lack of 2% oxygen would cause any problems with it.

how'd it turn out then?

Re: miging stainless

If you don't care about rust, just MIG away! At least thats what I have been doing. I am using a 110volt welder, with .030 wire and 100% CO2. And the welds are pretty damn good (once I finally learned how to weld that is). I was welding the stainless IC piping, and some stainless exhaust.

Re: miging stainless

it turned out alright doesnt look too bad im pretty new to welding. i cant see in the pipe to tell if it got good penetration but its holding well
