Manifolds made by Mig???
How many of you have made Manifolds from Migs??? just wondering because my Mig does a great job at welding Has full Penetration threw the metal... im gonna make just a Header out of Mild Steel and see how it holds up... so if anyone can let me know what you think about making manifolds with Mig's... Later on i would like to buy a Tig but i have only had my mig for like 4 month's...

Re: Manifolds made by Mig???
migs work great and look great if you can weld ;)
|
Re: Manifolds made by Mig???
Migs are great. As long as you have enough heat and not too much wire youll get good penetration.I like to do the first pass with high heat and moderate wire. Then I turn up the wire speed and do a second pass.

Re: Manifolds made by Mig???
mild steel wont crack as easily as stainless but it wont stay as pretty.

Re: Manifolds made by Mig???
I have a homemade mild steel migged manifold that has been holding for 5,000 miles +
The flange is homemade also I used a lincoln 135 amp on sched 40 and it penetrated nicely. Go for it. Get some high temp bbq paint or comparable to make it look a little better if that's a concern. |

ive got a craptacular lincoln promig 135 and it gets the job done..
made this bitch last year, should have gone with stainless, but i had the mild steel pipes laying around for months already. Attachment 34465 And this was the first manifold i ever made a half assed attempt at a ramhorn, i got lazy on the collector, couldnt figure out how to cut the pipes at an angle.... I had no prior welding experience, i just bought the welder, hooked up the gas, and started welding and this came out Attachment 34466 |
Re: Manifolds made by Mig???
Nice work guy's... i got my pipe on the way so when i make the manifold i'll post some pics... thanks again for the info...

Re: Manifolds made by Mig???
where are you getting your pipe from and for how much?
|
Re: Manifolds made by Mig???
I buy threw BMC, Racing Solutions, and LSD... i contacted and got the response from LSD and bought it from him... i bought 4 stright's and 4 u bends... i wonted 45's and 90's but he said he didnt have any so i just got that... $75 shipped for 16 gauge 1.75 Mild steel header pipeing... everyone else i seen only had 1.5 and1.6... my buddy orderd 1.5 header kit and it was way to small for the flange... I was told to use 1.75 and seen pics of the manifold with that pipe and choose to go with that...

Made mine w/using a handler 135. Depending on how cramped the manifold is, you have to really plan things out.
Attachment 34164 Attachment 34165 Hmm. I don't have any good angled pics of the whole thing. |
Re: Manifolds made by Mig???
Those manifolds look nice... i just got my Header pipeing in and should get started on it very soon.. i'll update this with some pics or add a link to it when i build my first 1... thanks guys...

Re: Manifolds made by Mig???
The only problem I hear is that you got 16g piping. Unless you really know how to design and suppot you manifold it will not carry the weight of your turbo and the stress of the engine rocking.

Re: Manifolds made by Mig???
That was Aaron (WeirTech). Aaron skills in fabricating are beyond most!!! Trust me, I'm not to far from him and I've seen them in person.
My manifold will be out of Mild Steel 16g also but 0% of the weight will be on the manifold. I can be done, but Sch 40 manifolds bearing the weight of a turbo crakc all the time so watch out! |
