making a 220v on the cheap
 

ive been googling and reading retarded ---- for an hour or two, maybe someone on here can tell me how to do this ---- :1 :8 style

i need to ad 220v to my garage, and it needs to be up to code n ----

see picture below. theres 2" pvc conduit comming out the ground by the meter into it back out into the ground down a few feet into the main panel in the basement. outside before it goes down theres a junction box with 3 wires going stright through they look like maybe 4 gauge. house was built in 99' if that matters.

welder takes 20.5A says hobart site.
can i take it from the a/c unit box safely?
otherwise im guessing i need to run what 3 wires(10gauge?) from my panel in the basement from a new 30a breaker, up out the conduit spit off conduit to the garage, to a 220v receptical.

is that 0-.5 on a full set run? check what the runnin amp require to be sure ive got a hobart setup at rav's hous on a 60a

all i can say is cut the power off before you touch anything

and test the wires with a multimeter before you touch anything

if the wire isnt going inside a wall, get the stuff that has metal wrapped around it. 10ga should be more than good.

Find someone who can do it for you if you dont want to put fire in your house and garage...

ive wired up outlets n ---- before and i work with electrical ---- and miltimeters at work so im not gona burn ---- down (i hope) i just never made a 220v

LOL no, you can't run it off the condensing unit. Run a new circuit. Call an electrician.

You do know that high voltage and cheap should not be spoken in the same sentence. Does your fire department live close?? Good luck O0

just remember 220 is 1 wire of 110v and two 55v.... its not hard

just cut the power. put in a new circut from the main box, run your wiring, put another box in your garage. hook it all up
turn the power back on.

Well he could run it off one circuit if he planned on never using both at the same time.

It's pretty simple stuff. Find the code on what kind of wire gauge you need. Probably going to be 10 gauge. Install a new 30A fuse. Run wire from fuse to outlet. Unlike Danz said, 220 is just two 110v lines and a ground. If you run 4 wire, then it is 2 110V lines, a ground, and a common. Typically you just want to run 3 line 220v line.

I don;t know ---- bout lectricity, I wired my 220 v welder. no fires, no blown breakers, and I didn't even get zapped once.

It's actully two legs of 110 feeding to a neutral.

I would recommend a seperate 30 amp two pole breaker and 10/3 wire. Run the wire through the existing conduit inside.

Black/Red to the two poles on the breaker. White wire to the neutral, copper wire to the ground. Kill the power before you install.

It's a PITA to turn the A/C off before you weld, and piggybacking off of the same breaker is against code.

i guess going through the existing conduit is against code too (because its pre-main breaker?) i did a new 3/4 pvc conduit for my four 10g wires - code is 4 wires now i guess even if you have a 3 prong welder plug. ------ code

220v... is really 208v, which uses 2 120v making it 2 pole single phase. There's no neutral carried through, just 2 hots and a ground to the building. 3 phase 208 is only seen in commercial kitchens and ----, like the big Henny Penny's in a Chickfila.

Correct me if I'm wrong or if you have 3 phase in your house, which would be weird.

got it done for $60 at home depot, with conduit breaker receptical and all that ----. the fire dep only came once cause there was so much smoke from fat welds and burnouts O0
