Just passed my bend test for welding class no.1

well I just took a dot style test for my welding in boces. was pretty cool make a few welds up hill down hill and sideways and then we hack it up and send it to a hydro jack and bend it in half. lol make or break right then. anybody else taking welding classes? I will get some pics up later this week. next week tiging piping getting ready to make some ram horn mani's ;D

Just starting some welding classes as part of Millwrights schooling. No tig for me though just shitty arc welding.I'm going to take some private tig lessons this winter so when a buy one in spring I can start fabbing me a ramhorn and a million other things.Do you find the tig harder to learn than arc or wire feed?

I worked for a short time as an instructor, now I'm just a run of the mill blue-collar welder.

Tig is going to be a lot more involved than wirefeed. You'll have to be able to use both hands, and in some cases a foot to manipulate the puddle and form a good weld. The most frustrating test I had to pass was copper-nickel pipe penetration.

Good luck with your classes.

well you really have to know how to acr weld at first basicly to do anything. you have to lean how to control the puddle first on something easy like arc before you can go on to other things more involved like tig. I mean when I tried tig after learing arc pretty good it seemd pretty easy to me I just have the problem being borderlin diabetic that I shake alot so, it can be hard to keep a nice steady puddle but if you can master keeping you puddle like the shape of your fingernail you can master pretty much anything in time.
and I am currently taking classes at boces. in western ny was a free clase offered from a ged class I was taking at the time. I will be going back this january to take the 2nd class for high tensile steel and propably stainless I am going to work on getting certified as a dot approved welder with the 1" thick plate bend test. : )

That is about what I figured.I own a wirefeed and am starting the arc lessons monday so I think once i grasp Arc the transition to Tig should be alot easier. It has been a progression slowly from solder, wirefeed, arc then Tig.Hopefully soon enough there will be no more buying manifolds and paying fabricators. Thanks for the info. :)

no problem. I actually just tried out the mig on wednesday lol man after learning acr that was a joke haha just point and shoot it. you will def benifit from the arc lessons. and I can't wait to not have to pay for and mani's either plus always cool when you open the hood and say yep I made the complete exaust mani for my turbo setup. and you would have just saved like umm 300+ $$ enjoy the classes and let me know how it goes. you'd be better off fabing something something up and posting up some info on how to do it and help other people out with their Q's, than thinking your the man because you can spell... if that's the case, go find a spelling B web site ;)

what are you trying to say... that I dont have a turbod car? if thats the case your wrong and If you think im jealous because you passed your welding test... good job with that and better luck next time graduating high school... high school diploma > ged

you may have a turbo'd car, and good for you :). But post up some pics of stuff you've fabbed for your car, or shut up :P

If you want to learn tig go learn how to torch weld.

werd. I used to oxy weld alot because its all I had and after getting pretty good at that tig is soo much easier. its nice to have heat control with your foot as apposed to having to change the torch angle all the time. that and the pulser feature that my machine has just makes me real happy when welding aluminum. :)

The first exhaust manifold i ever built was done with a torch. :6

Shane I'm full blown diabetic I just rest the heel of my right hand on the object and use my left to help me move and keep it steady. So Far I'm all self taught but I'm registering for classes in DEC. and start in Jan. Welding and fabrication. Good luck and take care of yourself before it goes full blown. Link you rock even if you can't spell post some more videos.

Im in welding class in high school... and yes oxy welding is a good skill to learn before you tig... tig sucks when you weld alum. cuz when you contaminate it and have to start over and ball the tungsten up again..

It's not all that bad to do really. Most likely, you didn't do much of it, or didn't have somebody there to show you a couple things that could have made a big difference for you.

I spent years welding that stuff, and it's really pretty easy to weld when you get used to it. It's not as sensitive to heat as stainless is.

And for those that use the term "arc welding".... tig IS arc welding, Mig IS arc welding, stick IS arc welding... Oxy-acetylene? nope, guess why.. cause there's no arc there!!

Why bother? DOT certifications are pretty much useless. Look up the DOT specs and they really aren't ----. Go for at least AWS certifications, if you're getting them on your own or through a welding class. Then, when it comes to working for somebody else, ASME certifications are the best ones to get.
Also, if the DOT specs are similar to ASME or AWS specs, speaking of material thicknesses, your 1" test will only certify you to weld something like 1/2"-2" plate...which is not very useful. 3/8" plate will certify you to weld thicknesses that you are more likely going to encounter.

You don't have to learn to stick weld before doing tig welding. I taught welding for quite a while, for Heil trailers. They didn't do any stick welding. It was all mig and tig. I found it didn't make much difference whether they did mig or tig first, even. I had pretty good success teaching tig welding to people that had never seen an arc before. I had guys that could pass AWS tests on aluminum within a week or two.

Nope...just break the dirty tip off, or grind it clean. Leave it broken on the end, or grind it a bit blunt, and go back to welding. It will get round again on its own ir you're welding hot enough.
You will very seldom see professionals do the old copper block and switching polarity thing to ball up the tungsten...unless they either like the habit, or are doing xray work.

Re: Just passed my bend test for welding class no.1

well the 3/8 stuff is easy anyways. I passed that with ease. I would agree that 1" is not going to be used as much by anymeans. But my instructor seemed to think it was a pretty big thing. I actually just tried a 1" test on tuesday just for the fun of it,but I was kinda in a rush to get it done and ended up getting it a little bit to hot and it crystlized in the metal. It broke at 10 tons. So I guess I will have to work on that. I actually have got a 3/8 plate to bend complety in half. It was not xrayed though but I think that is would have passed that anyways. well no more classed till January kinda sucks but at least I will have some time to practice in between times.

In many schools, they like to run you through all these certifications because they charge you for each one. It's a scam. 1" plate is easier to do than 3/8" plate because you can weld it hotter and decrease the chances of lack of fusion or slag inclusions.

What interpass temperature does the procedure call for?
If you havn't seen a procedure, you need to ask for one.
