Clean your meatl with a wire wheel that only cleans the stainless. Then use some acetone on it. How many amps was that at? Whats your argon flow? Do you use a gas lens?

Its a Smiley, the big knob is set to a C-hair under Nog, or 120. Whats a gas lense? lol The pink shroud?

Back that thing down to around 85-90 amps. Clean the metal better. Run your gas around 16-20. Go get a gas lens. Take your torch to the local welding supply to get the right one. I believe you have the same 17 torch and all the parts are standard. You need a gas lens and a new cup. The parts are cheap. Under $20 for everything. I buy lots of different size cups. You dont need the gas lens if you don't want to bother. It only helped me a bit.

Here is without the lens.

Went down to a local welding supply place and checked out the gas lense's. Seemed like a good idea, but they did not have the right size in stock.
Ended up turning the voltage way down, and the welds are turning out pretty sweet at 80-90.
The baller status top mount in the CRX is taking on a pretty sexy shape. :)

nice, good to hear, seriously dave, cleaning the materials and tungsten makes all the difference. Also as you get better and steadier with your small z's, you can move faster and yield some nice rainbows. You may even be able to bump the amps down a little more then you can keep the pedal full throttle until you get the technique down. Its just less things to worry about. Lastly make sure ur adding more filler, the picture you posted is well undercut and is bound to crack, so work on that.

make sure you do get a gas lens and a ceramic cup that goes over it, I use a 1/16 gas lens and a size 12 cup. that'll be a snug fit that won't allow oxygen to get into your argon (oxygen will explain all the coloring throughout your heat affected zone) but if you get color on the weld that means that you are letting oxygen enter in w/ the flow of your argon. Try moving your cup with the contour of the tubing, that'll help and if you get it right, you should not have too much color o n the weld but you'll see coloring through out your heat affected zone, discoloration on welds can be a weak point, but for stainless/mild.. I wouldn't know.. I weld titanium parts for my work. just some info.
