How to Weld?

OK well I am a Noob to welding still I have the basic's, done a few simple jobs for friends and was making my charge piping last night and was just curious how other do there welds....I usually try and make a continous bead, I mean stoping if I need to turn the pipe or what ever but at one point i did s few spot welds, like on and off with the tourch and it seem to be a much cleaner and deninfatly wasn't as raised as much as my other welds, also looked like those nice tig welds i envy, my question is basicly is that ok to do it that way? or have i been doing it wrong?

Oh i am rocking a Hobart 180 mig

Thanks for any help or advice...Matt

Re: How to Weld?

If you are asking if the deeper penetration of welds is good then the answer is yes for just the easy logic of more material making contact the stronger it will be. The only thing that would come to mind when u say you were using the torch on and off is the chance the the rapid heating and cooling of the material could cause the puddle to have voids in it there for not making it as solid as to say if you were using a more steady and continous heating on the puddle, but if you are just welding dp's they only have so much range of heat and weight that has to be held so i would say you should be fine and they should hold if you put the time into

Just curious if i've been doing it right i was welding my charge piping so as long as there is a seal i should be cool, just didn't know because my welds have a raised bead and didn't know since i mostly see tig welds and they wool to have a weld thats even with the materials and looks spotty almost, maybe i can find pics, i know mig and tig are different also just curious, thanks for the input

Re: How to Weld?

My welds kind of look like the one one the left, even with my beveling the edges and turning up the power

Can i make mig welds that look similar to this, I mean with a lot of practice of course

I know, it should be a nice peice but this is HMT so it should be better than the flux core ones i've seen also

Re: How to Weld?

the only way to make your welds look like the second one, is to get a tig machine, you can have clean mig beads, but they wont look like tig beads, because they are mig beads.

Re: How to Weld?

if your welds or rolled like the one on the left cut back the wire speed and move alittle faster to maybe

Re: How to Weld?

Yea I have my machine set on 1 for wire speed maybe I just need to move a little quicker, well thanks for the replys
