homemade thingy for turbo oil feed

i made this bolt/oil fitting for my turbo when i figured out that the brass fitting i had in there wasnt actually the right size.
just found this bolt in my tool box and started in on it. it used to be 3 inches long. cut it welded it drilled it and tapped it.
i drilled 2 different size holes. ones super tiny and the other is like 3/8 or something. anyways heres the pics.

beats going online, finding the part, PAYING FOR IT, and then WAITING FOR IT,
plus i know for a fact that this is what i need. i just dont know if its going to seal yet. it should though.

There's always JB weld if it doesn't seal. HMT FTW.

-16g turbo

-yeah the camera was on close-up mode but for some reason the flash was making it over saturated so i turned the flash off and
then with no light the shutter stays open longer and my hands had to be super steady. BUT i figured out how to get close-ups
and not have that problem anymore. ill post those later on. i got many more pics of installing.
the bolt broke when i put too much torque on it so i had to reweld it. now its super strong.

Did you finish repairing your manifold where the oxy-fuel burned some of the stainless up?

toyollAZ86 11-29-2008 09:59 PM

Re: homemade thingy for turbo oil feed

hahaha . oh yeah that was just a test run. since it didnt work we tig'd the whole thing up.
i later did another test on just a couple of scraps of SS to see if oxy would work on them..... it doesnt.

i should have my car up and running in a couple days after over a year of planning and building for boost.
i hope it works.

yeah, i had talked to someone that i know can do it over the last little bit and i know you need to use a backside flux and either a stainless flux tig rod or special frontside flux. weld it in small portions at a time.

More info on stainless flux tig rod. I have never seen/heard of it?

Re: homemade thingy for turbo oil feed

there are lots of ER flux rods avalible. You just have to make sure the flux does not get under the weld post root-pass. They're used for root-passing pipe when a backpurge is not viable. ASME FTW.
R308LT1-5, R309LT1-5, R316LT1-5 & R347LT1-5
Same basic classifications as SFA-5.3 & 5.9, etc

Intersting.

So say I am welded schedule 40 pipe, instead of back purging, I could do a root pass with flux cored stainless rod?

And then do a weave pass with filler with regular 309 filler rod?

If you wanted but note that is NOT a SMAW (stick) flux electrode. Those are ER. This is a non electrode filler rod designed to root pass tig. Rxxxxxx
Also note that the backside should still be purged if it's in the HAZ.

Re: homemade thingy for turbo oil feed

It's also likely much cheaper to gas-purge the backside with normal rods. Talking almost no argon flow VS paying more money for flux rods - that wont deposit as much material.

Yeah, I figured its cheaper to just back purge. I was trying to get the basics of what the Flux rod is used for. I read up a little more on it and it seams as though its used in larger pipe line welding.

there's all kinds of flux gtaw rods and gas rods. not just stainless. used for all kinds of stuff.
