has anyone made a hot tank for dipping dirty parts? i'm thinking about making one out of a 55gal drum and i'm looking for ideas. i googled it and found a couple things, but i'm not sure how good they will work.
i was gonna make a fire pit in my back yard and put a grate over it. half way fill up the drum with water and light the fire.
what should i used in the water?
purple power or lye or

i've got a few engines and heads i'd like to dip.

purple power will work, 10:1 will take overnight unless it's caked on (which you should have chipped off)

talk to stenseltizm about hot tanking, he builds that ----.

the electricity thing is not even close to what i want to do...
i already saw the other 2 links.
neither of them ended up making or using a home made hot tank.

complex: i'll try to soak it in purple power, i've already tried to spray it on (100%purple power) and letting it sit 10 mins then hosing off. it didn't work too good.

i have a nice tank i could use for small stuff like heads, maybe i'll set it up tonight and see.
some of the stuff i'm dipping has paint on it too, i was told that a "hot tank" would remove the paint and everything else. i don't know if the purple power would remove paint.

i was thinking about getting a small sandblaster setup to remove paint then dip it in the tank.

hot tanking is solvent based from what i know? use low fuming solvents if you hottank it via that way.

i've read a few places to use lye, but i'm not sure if that is correct for what i'm trying to do.

well the lye will convert the oil "fat" to soap and it will just rinse off.

lye is the main ingredient in purple power (hardware store) and purple rush (the industrial ----)

or go to ardexlabs.com and order the 5gal jug of purple rush, or even wheel cleaner (---- will work better, but may require agitation)
