Homemade engine hoist

3 Attachment(s)
Hey

For those who don’t have an engine hoist, here is how I managed to pull the engine out…

2 wooden studs strapped together on their side for more rigidity
2 scaffold sets
1 puller
1 sling
1 chain
2 17 mm bolts
1 redneck

That is it.

Re: Homemade engine hoist

that is the ----- way... i lifted my engine out with my two hands, and put it in with my two hands. the toughest part was picking it up off the floor after i put it down inbetween engine bays.

This is probably because you've been welding for so long, your exposition to metal fumes made you a super human, half man, half robot.

If ever I meet you in person, don't be offended if I don't shake your hand, as I don't want my arm to be teared off. ;)

Re: Homemade engine hoist

with my EGs I just jack the car up high and drop the motor and trans. down with jack(s) and pull them out from underneath the car. Reverse the operation to install.

I bought one for 100 dollars at harbor freight and have owned it for like 8 years now. What a horrible investment

mine is diesel powered.

It works alright; just bleeds down if you cut it off.

Me and my homie pulled his single cam with a 2x4 and a rear seatbelt from a 240sx.

My dad did something like this before (a lot more ghetto) but it was for a V8...

We just throw the block & tackel up in a tree. It's cheaper than renting scaffolding :D

ive done it this way and ive also used a cherry picker, both without a lift. I heart lifts though

Re: Homemade engine hoist

Hell even cheaper. Just jack the frontend up high enough to slide the engine under. Or if your removing the engine, lower the car as low as possible. Unbolt engine mounts, and have a rug or a piece of cardboard to slide the engine out easier on. The car should be low enough that the engine is actually resting on the ground after you lower it. The oem jacks are low enough to jack it back up to use a normal jack and some stands. I used a couple oem jacks, like two big chunks of wood or you can used phonebooks to get it up high enough. Ghetto yes, but it works and can be done with stuff just around the house or hell in your car.

Re: Homemade engine hoist

I built a steel A Frame a few years ago for pulling engines. Went to a shipyard and got some old rail cap and rigging off a shrimp boat and used that to build the frame. Works good. It's only like 11' tall though. Needs to be like 14 but it usually works. I've also hung chain files in trees before.

Funny and I wish I had pics: My machinest built a wooden lift. The beam is about 2' tall, 12' long. The 2x2's are on the top and bottom of the OSB on both sides bolted together to form an I beam. The frame that supports is is all 2x6's bolted together. It's also on wheels. It looks funny but he used it to move a 3 ton milling machine! :8

i bought one at HF also. i've pulled 4 engines and put 5 in with it. works great and it was super cheap.

Re: Homemade engine hoist

I just pick it up and drop it in, there not that big.

Yeah I can't understand all this fabrication. I got an HF one second hand for $80. Has saved me a lot of time.

A wooden hoist? That sounds as safe as a wooden roller coast is to ride. I'll never ride that ------- American Eagle coaster at Great America just listening to it creak and ----.

96blkcoupe 06-21-2009 05:27 PM

wow. iv used a tree b4

racer67 06-21-2009 10:18 PM

Rent a hoist. You could die.

07LXcoupe 06-23-2009 09:40 AM

awsome, get er done lol

ek9561 07-18-2009 02:59 PM

wow

mdotholla 08-07-2009 01:40 AM

i got something like that works great.

Cole89ef 08-08-2009 03:38 PM

Doesn't look that easy, the nice thing about real lifts is that you can pull the motor away when its out of the car, what did you do with this one?

drevinder 08-15-2009 12:33 AM

lol

hard2obtain 08-15-2009 01:47 PM

A friend of mine have a towing company... and guess what... XD

That is a very fast solution too

fry12ice 08-15-2009 11:54 PM

thats pretty smart

sde780 08-16-2009 12:45 PM

What's smarter is dropping the fucker out from the bottom, I did it in my backyard twice. Easy as ----

jbarr89 08-16-2009 07:46 PM

interesting....

joexiong 09-22-2009 11:20 PM

mr dale 10-08-2009 09:59 PM

yea, those motors only weigh like 150-200 lbs, you should be able to just pick them up with the help of a friend.

DK_Fr0m_cc 10-12-2009 01:37 PM
