cool, but that ---- scares me. that arc/plasma stream is way to hot. i might try this after i do some electrical engineering courses.

awesome. slowest plasma cutter of all time. how thick does it cut?
$260?
You can get 50 amp chinese cutters for sub $300 now.



The project is on the yahoo welding group in detail. Looks like itd be a bitch to get it running well.

If you use that arc stabilizer circut (part with car coil) you should be able to turn your stick welder into a tig machine that can do aluminum.

The guy designed it so it could be put together by most anyone with common hand tools. He did a really good job of it, too.

If you ditch the $20 GM 3-pin module for a $0.57 IGBT that's rated to handle more power things get dirty cheap. Under $100 easy, and you can scale up the capacity of the unit for very little extra. FYI, I have three sets of china plasma cutter torches, they run $25 plus ship, along with the TIG torches and welder itself, from anyone who had their Smiley 3-in-1 take a steamy dump.

The circuit is freaking simple, I'm not seeing anything beyond spark gap that needs to be fiddled to get it running well. I really like how he uses commonplace stove coils as resistor banks; you can find the real deal for a dollar at a local scrap metal facility, but that's plain crafty.
