Hobart Welder Question
 

I'm pretty set on getting either a Hobart Handler 140, or 187. But I cant decide if the 187 is worth the extra money. And another big issue is the fact that I dont have access to a 220v receptical, and when I move in 4 months, I will be renting a house...so, if you think I should spend the extra cash on the 187, what exactly does it take to get a 220v hookup installed (in a rental home), and what should I expect to pay?

Also, the cheapest I've found them shipped are $670 or $600 reconditioned for the 187, and $480 or $430 reconditioned for the 140. Know of it cheaper anywhere else?

I bought the 140 about a year ago. It is 120V. I've used it for exhaust tubing and exhaust maniolds. I've never had a single problem, love it. You can buy a new one from Northern Tool right now for $480 w/free shipping.

220v is avail. at your nearest dryer outlet, build an extension cord for the 220v hookup.

go for the bigger welder it will expand opp. later for cage work or side work.

The 120v welder would work great for welding small things like exhaust and thinner sheet metal. But if you want to weld thinker, more structural things, I'd recommend the 220v. I've never heard anything bad about the Hobarts. I've used them a few times, and they've all worked well!

As for "getting" a 220 plug, they are easy to add, if you know anything about electrical work. The post above about the dryer thing, thats also a good idea if you can't mess with stuff in the rental!
