HMT Blast Cabinet

Got a $30 ($24 with 20% coupon) blasting "kit" from harbor freight

Spent another $18 or so on the other parts. Plastic sheet was free, rubber thing is a firewall A/C hose grommet. Sand trap is a scotch-brite pad.

Waiting for caulking to dry

Bad ass. I want to see it in action.

Re: HMT Blast Cabinet

The window on top will be glazed over after the first blasting or the top will pop off from the pressure. Cool idea if it works.

ya I pretty much expect that (glazing).

Didnt really think that through thoroughly but it'll get very little use. It has a ~3" x 2" vent with the scotch-brite on it. Im hoping that will keep the pressure in check. I'll be giving it a test drive tomorrow.

very nice!
window won't glaze over too bad, just gets dusty. some people tape those clear plastic overhead projector sheets on there, or you can just replace the glass every so often.

If you can find a way to hook up a shop vac through the scotch bright it would be money. It'll keep the dust down and provide a constant vacuum (even when blasting) so you wont have dust blowing out the area around the gloves (or any other leaks). Might need a better filter than scotch bright so you don't fry your shop vac. try it and see!

Re: HMT Blast Cabinet

i was looking at getting that, i'm too cheap to buy media though.
i was gonna go to the beach and grab a 5 gal bucket of sand, but some people told me it's not a good idea.
i figured i'd make a decent sized sand box in the back yard and lay the parts in the sand then just blast away.
let me know how it works out, what are you gonna use for media?

Re: HMT Blast Cabinet

I got a 25? lb of glass beads from HF for like $15 or something.

I ended up riveting the gloves to the box b/c I'm impatient.

yeah I'm a lazy ---- plus I've got a mental thing where I can't finish things 100%. Riveter was from who knows where but yeah most likely HF ;)

Went pretty quick. Cleaned the wheel in 2-3 minutes and maybe 10 minutes on the plate. Woulda been much faster but my compressor holds like a teaspoon of compressed air.

dont use sand, first you got to strain it and make sure its dry, plus it scratches aluminum pretty easily.
if you use a cabinet then you can recover the media, i recommend the glass beads, but make sure you got eye protection because that ---- hurts when its in your eyes
